I grew up in a big city and I moved to a small town ... and I like it.
My current residence: West Plains, Missouri. Total population: 12,320. Yes, our main attraction is Walmart but there are plenty of things to love about downsizing.
Let me back up, I'm from St. Louis. Total population: 311,404. Then, I attended college in West Plains before transferring to Springfield. Total population:167,319. There are pros and cons to every city, here are the reasons I like living in a small town.
1. Fewer Distractions
There aren't a million different things demanding my attention. I spend more time doing what I want. No one can stop me from binge-watching Netflix.
2. Traffic
Since I've lived here, I can't recall anyone saying there was traffic in town. Everything is within walking distance or a 10-minute drive.
3. RENT
Small town equals a low cost of living. Affordable, comfortable and pet-friendly. Take my money!
4. Small Businesses
With all the thrift shops and family businesses, it's easy to shop locally. The opportunity to support community roots are always available.
5. Safety
Personally, I feel safer here. Living alone can be scary sometimes, but the chances of crimes against me are slim to none.
6. Peace and Quiet
The lack of noise is a beautiful thing. It's amazing all the things I didn't realize make so many sounds in the city. A small town allows me to appreciate every minute of solitude.
7. Meaningful Relationships
Most people are very family focused so they don't have to hang out with you unless they want. When you do make friends, those relationships are genuine.
8. Faith
In the midwest, we're almost surrounded by people of faith. This is more apparent here. It's freeing to have a conversation with someone of faith and remind them of that relationship we share.
The access to these things make me enjoy small town life. Although I won't be here forever, these benefits will shape what I look for when making my next move.
