It's the end of the school year and we've been waiting all year for this moment: the moment we know that summer has begun. The feeling that we have transitioned to summer does not kick in until we have completely immersed ourselves in the laziness, carefreeness and happiness that we no longer have to wake up at 7 a.m. for class. Here are certain moments that trigger our emotions to think, "Yes, it's finally summer."
1. We stop setting alarms for the morning.
The clock app on our phones is completely unused in the summer. There is no need to set an alarm to wake up early in the morning to barely make it to class on time. We finally don't have to hear the dreaded ringing of our alarms, and rolling over from your peaceful sleep to hit the snooze button with remorse.
2. You catch yourself watching the early 2000s TV shows.
Somedays, when we have nothing planned, we all just want to sit on the couch and watch some good old TV. It's probably around noon and all that is on are shows and episodes from the early 2000s. From "Gilmore Girls" to ancient episodes of "SpongeBob SquarePants," we have probably seen them over 20 times, but we still watch them anyway.
3. The sun seems to shine brighter.
Whether you are just waking up in the morning or walking down the street, there is something about the sun that just tells you that it's summer. The days are longer, and the sun just feels extra bright, giving off more warmth. Most days we will take sunshine for granted, but in the summer, we find ourselves enjoying every moment of it.
4. You plan adventures.
Summer calls for going on adventures. Maybe it's going on a hike, a road trip, to the beach or to watch a baseball game, summer is a time to explore and have fun. You know your summer has started when you make a bucket list of places you have to visit and activities you have to do.
5. You rarely look at the clock throughout the day.
Unless you have a busy schedule of work and appointments, you will probably check for the time maybe three times throughout the day: once when you wake up, again when you check what time you should eat dinner and lastly to see how late you are going to bed.
6. You're active.
You know summer has started when you start finding time to be active and work out. We are not entirely lazy, and there are days where we just have nothing planned and we just want to go for a nice run around the neighborhood or go hit the gym.
7. You trade lunch for an early dinner.
Now I don't know about you, but I know that most college students and myself do not wake up in time for breakfast, and just miss lunchtime by an hour. We know it is summer when the only full meal we eat is in between lunch and dinner time. Breakfast is out of the question, lunchtime can be debatable, so we normally find ourselves hungry and ready to eat an early dinner.
8. You find yourself getting progressively tanner every day.
Whether purposeful or not, everyone gets a tan over summer. Summer is a time when we start laying out by the pool and are just out more during the day. We start getting tan lines from our socks and sandals, but hey, who's complaining?
