8 Reasons Spring Semester Absolutely Rocks

Every weekend is the best weekend of your life.

8 Reasons Spring Semester Absolutely Rocks

Oh, you think you had fun last semester? Just wait. Second semester is like when you go to Starbucks late at night so they give you all the pastries in the case for free. You wanted the pastries, but now you have 9 scones and they were all free. That is second semester; you wanted to have fun and then all of sudden you have the best weekend of your life every single weekend. Now that’s wild. It’s not free like the Starbucks scones, but it is way better.

  1. If you are a freshman, by now you don’t have as many of those awkward I-am-trying-to-make-friends interactions: You know exactly what I am talking about. First semester is all about waving at people but never remembering their names and going out to lunch and asking people what they want to study or where they are from. By now, school is much more homey than it used to be and you can stop pretending to be excited that someone is ALSO studying business or saying that all you know about New Jersey is from the Jersey Shore show.
  2. Carolina Cup: This just deserves an entire number on this list. If you can peak twice in your life, I peaked last year and fully intend to peak again this year. Literally the goofiest and most irresponsible day of the entire spring semester.
  3. St. Patrick’s Day: The other option for my article this week was writing about how this is such an underrated holiday. It’s fun. It’s green. All the parties had different themes and everyone still shows up in green. That’s awesome.
  4. The weather: Now, this March has been obnoxiously cold, so it doesn’t count. But usually, we are starting to enter into the sunny and "75 times" of spring and could it get better than that?
  5. Every weekend has something going on: Either it’s Carolina Cup or beach weekend or a date function or Wake N Shake. The spring semester is just endless good times. The weekdays don't get easier but there is always something good to look forward to at the end of the hard week.
  6. Spring Break: It doesn’t have to be like every movie you have ever seen about Spring Break. It can be, or you can go home and bond with your parents that you haven’t seen all semester. Spring Break is like Winter Break’s more optimistic and fun best friend.
  7. If you are a sophomore, you are getting excited about studying abroad: Wake is great, but this is all the more reason for the sophomores to be running wild. We might not be on campus next semester—so we should probably live it up before we are in a different country away from our friends where we may or may not speak the language. Huge and exciting stuff happening over in Europe I hear.
  8. You have finally learned how to study: It’s funny cause I am procrastinating writing this article right now, but at least for freshmen, you realize what a high caliber this school functions at and how to not let it absolutely wreck you.

The fact that I now have to do homework and cannot reminisce on how great this semester is going to be is practically unethical. But just remember that this is going to kick first semesters butt so—there you have your really good reason to sit down and write that paper or study for that orgo test.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
