1. The many research opportunities at Arizona State University

There are many professors at Arizona State University specializing in different aspects of biomedical engineering from designing a new medical imaging device, to engineering hearts, to neurosurgeries of rate to analyze brain plasticity and understand stroke - there is something for everyone.

2. Great backup for medical school

There are many students in this major who are planning on continuing their studies in medical school. Biomedical engineering prepares these students for the intense workload and time management skills necessary to tackle medical school. It also introduces these students to the medical industry from day 1 analyzing FDA regulations and the application of modern medicine.

3. Capstone is a $5 million laboratory for senior BME students

The senior year Capstone Laboratory is a $5 million dollar research facility for students to start designing a product to enter the industry and even possibly start a company.

4. The people

The intense workload of biomedical engineering fosters close connections within the graduating cohort and enables these students to be part of a giant family working towards the same goals and aspirations of expanding the medical field and healthcare.

5. Dr. Kleim eats a brain on the first day of class

On my very first day of Biomedical Engineering, I entered my first college class as a freshman only to find my teacher eating a brain on the first day of class.

6. Jack of all trades

BME is a combination of practically every engineering subspecialty. From taking classes in computer science, electrical, materials, mechanical, and chemical engineering, biomedical engineering truly introduces its students to all the fields of engineering and enables them to respond to different types of situations.

7. There is a separate career fair for BME majors

Because BME is an upcoming and relatively new field there are few specialty medical companies which regularly needs bioengineers for employment. ASU, therefore, has a specific career fair for students in this specialty so that they would not have to compete against the other engineering varieties.8. International trade in medical device industry is an important cornerstone for the United States. It is found that 35-40% of domestic production is exported and a similar quantity is imported. These foreign sales account for 40-50% of the total revenue in the United States with it being the largest single market in the world accounting for 40% of the worldwide market.

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.
