8 Reasons Why I Love My Small College

I'm quite blessed to be able to say that the school I attend is my dream college. Many of the reasons why I love it so much is because it's small. Graduating from a high school with 200 some students actually made my college of 3,500 look huge, but now I believe that it's the perfect size. I would have been lost at a huge university, but here, I am completely at home. In no particular order, here are the top 8 reasons why I love my small college:

1. Short commutes

I can get to class from my dorm in under 5 minutes. I use this to my advantage by napping till the last possible second, and still getting to class on time. Minimizing the amount of time you are out in the cold during the winter is another perk.

2. Friendly faces

It's a guarantee that I'm going to see people I know every time I'm walking around campus. There's nothing like a friendly smile or wave to make your day a little better.

3. The professors

My professors know my name, and I know exactly where to find all of their offices if I ever need them. This also means that they can find me if I ever skip class, pro or con? You tell me.

4. Oh, the clubs you can join...

The organizations I'm in are the perfect size. I get to know people better, and I can be in a variety of clubs. There are so many leadership opportunities that don't involve as much competition as they would if the organization had as many people as they do at bigger colleges.

5. Small classes

I never have class with more than 20 people. In fact, I have many classes with less than 10.

6. Friends upon friends

You run in to the same people in many of your classes, which makes it easier to find friends that you have a lot in common with.

7. Makin' it rain

There are more scholarship opportunities! (This is huge) A college with less students means there is less competition when it comes to free money.

8. Three cheers for jobs

Speaking of money, there is less competition for job opportunities! I have two on campus jobs that I love, and many of my friends do too.

So there you have it. While I know large universities offer some advantages that smaller schools don't have, I encourage anybody looking at colleges to check out a smaller one! You might just find your place somewhere that you never would have imagined you would.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
