1. Its meaning
The story of Hanukkah is so interesting because it was a miracle that the oil lasted for eight nights. The message that I got out of it is that perseverance is key - in life, anything can happen if you just believe.
2. Lighting the menorah
I always enjoy lighting the menorah each night, as it is the festival of lights. It is interesting that the shamash, the middle candle, is the one that will light the others every night.
3. Latkes
Latkes are not only delicious and fulfilling, but they are fun to make. They can be served with dipping sauces such as sour cream or applesauce, or can include fillings such as carrots or onions.
4. Spending time with family and friends
Spending time with loved ones on this holiday is so fun and important. In my family, the first or second night is usually the most special because I spend it with my grandparents. We always have a delicious meal, light the candles, play games, and open presents.
5. Playing the dreidel game
The picture above explains how to play the game, which is really fun and can last for a while. It is also enjoyable to play with chocolate coins because the winner gets to eat them or share with other players.
6. When everyone wears blue
I find that blue is a very flattering color on everyone. While it may be harder for one to find an "ugly Hanukkah sweater," I think that they are a lot more unique than Christmas sweaters.
7. The songs
The songs are familiar, catchy, and not entirely overplayed. Some of the most famous ones include Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song," "Candlelight" by the Maccebeats, and "Hanukkah oh Hanukkah" by Erran Baron Cohen.
8. The 8 nights
Hanukkah is unique because it is the longest holiday that Jewish people celebrate. Most holidays come and go so quickly where if you blink an eye, you miss it, but this is not the case here. The length of Hanukkah gives all the opportunity to enjoy it and be thankful for the festival of lights.
