As Halloween approaches, many of us are still in search of a costume that's the perfect balance of cheap, easy, and fun. If this predicament sounds familiar, then I've got the answer for you: a punny costume. Now, a punny costume accomplishes two things. First, it's a low-cost, low-effort outfit that will take you little to no time to throw together. This way, you won't have to drop $50 on a store-bought costume that will be ruined by the end of the night. Secondly, your costume will help establish who at a party is worth talking to. If they don't appreciate your hilarious puns, they're simply not worth your time. That being said, here are just a few ideas to help you find your bootiful Halloween outfit (pun definitely intended).
1. Smarty Pants
What You'll Need:
Big bag of smarties, Scotch tape, pants
An oldie but a goodie (get it? like sometimes candy is called goodies? no?), this costume literally only requires you to tape a bunch of smarties to your pants. That's it. That's the entire thing. If you want to be a bit more snazzy with it, you could dress up as a "nerd" (with big glasses and a collared shirt and pocket protector and all that) and then add the smarties on top of that. This might make the pun more obvious to people, but it's up to you just how much effort you want to spend on your costume.
2. Holy Guacamole
What You'll Need:
A halo, a printed out picture of an avocado (or a real one if you want to carry it around all night), tape.
Tape the picture to the front of a white t-shirt and pop on a cheap halo headband and you're ready to guac and roll. Wings could be added to make the pun more obvious, but that might require more money and/or effort on your part. If you're down for that, go for it! You'll be the hottest guac on the block.
3. Ceiling Fan
What You'll Need:
A sign or shirt that reads something along the lines of "Go Ceiling!"
This one is a little cliche, but you could take it to the next level by adding a foam finger or possibly accessorizing with a cheerleading outfit. However, if you just want to keep it simple, you don't have to blow it out of proportion. The simplest interpretation of the costume will still get the joke across. The party will be a breeze.
4. Copy Cat
What You'll Need:
Cat ears, shirt that says "copy".
This costume would be funnier if you convinced a friend to dress up as a regular cat and then you followed them around all night copying everything they did. However, this pun works as a stand-alone costume as well. Either way, it's a purrfect last minute costume that can be both cute and punny.
5. Social Butterfly
What You'll Need:
Butterfly wings, antennae, printed out pictures of social media app icons, tape.
Tape a bunch of the social media app icons to a white shirt and pair it with some butterfly wings and you'll be the flyest. Ironically, this would be a good costume to wear if you are an introvert, mainly because you could just look at your phone the whole time you're out and claim it was all part of the costume aesthetic. But you really should make an effort to break out of your cocoon and be the real social butterfly you're meant to be.
6. Burger King/Dairy Queen
What You'll Need:
A crown or tiara, printed out pictures of burgers or a variety of dairy products, tape.
This costume could be done as a couples costume or you could do either one as a stand-alone. As with most of these, you could take the easy route and just tape the pictures to a solid white t-shirt and call it a day. But if you really wanna make this a real whopper of a costume, you could accessorize with a Burger King bag or perhaps, if you're feeling extra, a modified milk gallon or butter container which could double as a clutch.
7. Shooting Star
What You'll Need:
Gold star stickers or really anything star-shaped that you could attach to your (preferably black or dark blue) clothing, a water gun.
Your costume game will be out of this world if you make the most out of this punny idea. You could definitely glam this costume up by doing an over the top silver and gold makeup look. If makeup isn't your style, you'll still shine in your galactic get up without it.
8. Hawaiian Punch
What You'll Need:
Boxing Gloves, lei, hula skirt and/or Hawaiian shirt.
You can also carry around a container of Hawaiian punch, but that might be a bit heavy. This costume is a knockout either way.
Hopefully, you've found a costume that's easy and tickles your funny bone as well! Happy Halloween and best of luck on your puntastic costumes!
