It's almost summer, guys!
And if you're like me, you're struggling to keep it together during these final weeks of classes and exams because you just can't wait to be lounging around in the sunshine and glory that is summer break.
With freedom just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about possible destinations and vacation spots to explore during the long break. But, of course, if you're from Maryland, you can't always plan a faraway trip for whatever reason - whether you're saving up for something else or have commitments to attend to in the area, like internships or summer classes. Still, you can find some pretty neat places to discover and explore right here in the DMV - a pseudo-stay-cation if you will. And if you're not from Maryland but are thinking of coming to visit the area during those hot summer days, here are a few places you might want to try out:
1. Great Falls Park in Fairfax County, VA
Great Falls Park is a great spot for you outdoorsy folk out there. The views here are amazing and the falls themselves are scenic and calming. It's a really nice spot to get away and just enjoy nature. From hiking to kayaking to camping, the amount of activities Great Falls has to offer are endless and fun. Getting your daily work out in is a little more special when you're surrounded by scenic views and helpful trails. Definitely aim to get there a little earlier in the day if you want to avoid crowds; it's a really popular spot during the warmer months of the year.
2. Ocean City, MD
Now, if you absolutely can't do summer without the beach, Ocean City is probably the most convenient location for you to visit. Is it the best beach? Probably not. Still, it should work to at least moderately fulfill all your summer beach dreams. It's a popular destination for anyone in the state and definitely serves as a major tourist stop during the summer months. It's definitely a reasonable spot for an away weekend or just a day trip. You can't go wrong with the beach - no matter what!
3. National Harbor, Oxon Hill, MD
National Harbor is definitely your go-to spot for a fun day or night trip. The place literally has everything. There are endless possibilities while in National Harbor. There's the huge MGM casino if you're into that sort of thing. There's also a stellar ferris wheel (if you're not afraid of heights - even if you are, there's always a first time for everything!). Not to mention endless restaurants, boutiques and stores, coffee shops, and even dainty and cute candy shops. The view of the harbor is amazing and they even have musical performances and huge lawn movie screenings during the summer. What's not to like?
4. National Aquarium, Baltimore Inner Harbor
The National Aquarium in Baltimore is easily one of Maryland's most popular attractions. Located in the Inner Harbor, the extensive aquarium is fittingly placed right on the shore of the (toxic) waters. Nonetheless, the aquarium is home to some amazing marine life in an expansive structure - your entire day will be spent observing them and interacting with them. You can check out the dolphin shows, stingrays, sharks, puffins, and reptilian life, etc. The jellyfish are by far one of my favorite aspects of the aquarium. There's so much to explore and so many different ways to dive into all the colorful and eye-catching marine life.
5. Georgetown, DC
Ah yes, Georgetown. One of my favorite spots in the DMV. Yes, it can be a little boujee, but it's truly an all-around package of a destination. Whether you're walking on the Georgetown Waterfront Park or strolling around by the historical structures of the city, there's a whole lot to see in this bustling spot. The restaurants are quality, the city is beautiful (and aesthetically pleasing), and the stores and attractions are endless. Take a relaxing walk by the canal or check out the original (albeit extremely busy and crowded) Georgetown Cupcakes - or check out Baked and Wired because they're honestly just as good. No matter what you find yourself doing in this town, you'll have an amazing time (with the cost of your feet aching from all the walking and of course, the costs of DC parking).
6. The Baltimore Museum of Art
You don't always have to head to DC to view some amazing art (although there's nothing wrong with that either). This museum is located within the Johns Hopkins University campus and right by the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). This museum features several works from the 19th century to contemporary works. My personal favorite is the Andy Warhol collection - one of the largest collections of the artist in the DMV. You don't want to miss out on this more hidden gem of a destination if you're a true lover of the arts.
7. Adventure Park, Sandy Spring, MD
Here we're back to the outdoor attractions, again. I mean, if you're gonna soak up all the joys of the warm weather, why not spend the day exploring outside with nature? This forest set-up of whimsical pathways, bridges, zip lines, and rope rigs is complex and jarring but, it's also a fun, hands-on activity for anyone looking for a little adventure (see what I did there? *insert smirk here*). If you're looking for a little something to satisfy the athletic side of you, this ultimate playground might be just the place to let out the inner child within you. They even have night events so you can climb and explore while following your friends and cute string lights hung all over the park.
8. Literally anywhere in DC
One of the best things about being in Maryland or the area surrounding it is being in such close proximity to the capital of the U.S. You are so close to such a central hub of so many attractions and places to dive into, the possibilities are absolutely endless. From museums and art galleries right outside the Smithsonian Metro station to the National Monument, The Capitol building, and the White House (not saying you have to visit there specifically). Whether you're feeling especially patriotic these days or not, DC has a whole lot to offer that's historically and culturally informative. The restaurants are amazing and the clubs and bars are perfect for a night out on the town. There are so many options and with a Metro system as extensive as DC's, you can get around to just about anywhere. An entire summer won't even give you enough time to explore all the city has to offer.
So whether you take the more nature-driven route or lean more toward the city, a stay-cation or a visit to the DMV can be thoroughly fulfilling for the summer. No matter where you are in the state or its general surrounding areas, there's a whole lot to explore this summer. Don't sulk because you didn't get to head far out for your break, but maybe take the opportunity to explore some gems a little closer to home. You never know, you might just find your new favorite spot. Cheers to all your adventures this summer!
