Last week, the local government of Montreal made a heartbreaking decision to "ban" pit bulls, similar to the ban Ontario enforced in 2005. According to this article from the Washington Post, any new adoptions of pit bulls will be prohibited, and any pups that aren't "grandfathered in" will be in danger of being killed. If a resident wants to keep their beloved pet, they will face a hefty fine, be forced to muzzle their dogs while in public, and keep them on a four-foot-long leash or shorter.
Now, you'll find a lot of people out there (sadly) that think these beautiful creatures are "dangerous." But let's make one thing clear... It is us that makes them dangerous. It is their owner who mistreats them, forces them to fight, or just doesn't care for them that causes them to do harm. It is the fact that dogs pick up on threats, and ANY dog put in a stressful situation could resort to biting to protect themselves. These babies aren't dangerous, they're scared.
Some have spent their whole lives fighting, not because they wanted to, but because that is what a human turned them into. I have known Yorkies that were meaner and more "dangerous" than most pit bulls I've ever met So here are a few pits who prove that they are just too dangerous to be allowed. Viewer discretion is advised.
1. This Pit Bull viciously snuggling with an innocent, unsuspecting child.
Here, we can see an obviously dangerous pit curled up next to it's tiny human, posing a visible threat.
2. The poor fish caught this day were subject to the dangers brought on by this boy.
Because, you know, they're not only dangerous to humans, but also to all aquatic animals. Another reason to ban them.
3. Their teeth aren't the only thing you have to worry about...
Watch out for the tongue. They might just lick you to death.
4. Don't let the party hat fool you.
It's a disguise to earn your trust before they attack. And by "attack," we mean their birthday cake.
5. Beware of any pup that is a Tennessee fan.
This pit is capable of awful things such as cheering too loud and singing "Rocky Top" after every touchdown.
7. This Pit mix even brought along his friend for back-up.
Double trouble.
8. And finally, this Pit who stole my heart.
This sweet pup, Avery, belongs to my boyfriend and is the reason I feel so h2ly about breed-specific regulations such as what Montreal has recently passed. Avery is the sweetest, most loyal, hilarious, snuggliest dog I know. She's not mine, but I love her like she is, and the thought that there are people out there that think she should be banned or killed just because of what she is makes me sick.
It is 2016. Let's stop the breed bans and take responsibility for what humanity has done. These dogs did not ask to be born. All they asked for is a loving family and home. Pits are great with children, protective, loyal, goofy and just all-around incredible dogs. To know one is to love one.
What Montreal has done is nothing short of despicable. The amount if negative international attention this has received is both overwhelming and hopeful. Knowing that there are so many out there who love and care about these animals gives us hope that restrictions like this won't continue.
Check your local area for Pit rescue groups and ways to get involved with saving the lives of these beautiful creatures.
