Everyone likes to say that there's nothing to do in Ohio, but I beg to differ. I have lived here my whole life, and yes I would love to live somewhere warm year-round, but I have learned to make the best of it! After years of "cute date" planning and stumbling upon hidden gems, I have compiled a list of some of the best places to go for some summer fun without having to buy a plane ticket.
1. Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Personally, I think it's pretty cool that there is a national park right here in Ohio. With over 125 miles of hiking trails, cliffs, and waterfalls, this park can be a multi-day adventure. Visit Virginia Kendall, Whipps Ledges, or the Valley for some amazing views.
2. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Located in Lexington, Ohio, this 2.4-mile road racing circuit is perfect for a fun weekend. You can camp, watch all kinds of racing, or even take a driving school on the track.
3. Cedar Point.
This one is obvious! The roller coaster capital of the world is right here in our home state. With 364 acres and 72 rides, there is no shortage of fun here.
4. Mohican State Park.
With kayaking, canoeing, a ropes course, hiking, and plenty of campgrounds, this place is an easy weekend filled with fun. Located in Loudonville, Ohio, Mohican State Park offers countless activities and places to stay (all relatively cheap too).
5. Hocking Hills.
Located in Logan, Ohio, The Hocking Hills state parks and forests are a beautiful sight. Also complete with waterfalls, hiking trails, and zip lines, this area is a great camping destination.
6. The Valley City Frog Jump.
You probably haven't heard of this one, but it's in my hometown! In Valley City, Ohio, the annual Frog Jump Festival is a huge hit. Valley City, "the frog jump capital of Ohio," hold this festival every summer and draws a huge crowd. People can bring their own frog or rent one at the event, and compete all day to see whose frog can jump the farthest!
7. The Mansfield Reformatory.
If you're into history, creepy places, or Shawshank Redemption, this is the ultimate destination for you. Built in 1834, this penitentiary was the third to open in the state of Ohio. It housed prisoners until 1990 when it was ordered to be shut down due to "overcrowding and inhumane conditions." You can tour the whole building and they often host events there.
8. The Islands.
Kelleys Island and Put-In-Bay are both the perfect summer day trip! With just a 20-minute ferry ride you can be living the island life, complete with rental golf carts and sail boats galore.
There are many many more places and fun things to do around Ohio, but these are some of the best. GET OUTSIDE!
