8 Lessons To Be Learned From Cats

Valuable lessons taught to us by the cutest cats.

8 Lessons To Be Learned From Cats
Tori Weber

I am a cat person through and through. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love dogs. Most dogs are far more responsive, loyal, and all around attached to their owner's hip. Cats (at least my stubborn one) won't cuddle, doesn't want to be pet, hides away all day, and refuses to do anything other than what she wants to do. She's a spoiled little princess for sure.

But boy do I still love her. In fact, I'm such a cat person, that I've decided to share some cat GIFs with you that teach some very valuable lessons.

1. Protect the snacks at all cost.

I love snacks. I love snacks so much I'll fight someone who tries to eat my last animal cracker out of my box.

This cat has developed the best defense mechanism of her snacks: attack when they least expect it. Train your enemies to fear your snacks. That way you get all of the snacks to yourself.

2. Hide away.

Sometimes the days are hard. It's okay to take a break during the day to regather yourself.

Curl up on the couch, take a deep breath, and ... crawl into the couch to take a nap? I guess! Just know it is okay to get away to be on your own.

3. Determination overpowers size.

Sometimes it seems that we can't defeat our enemies or our problems. But I'm here to tell you that you can. No matter the enemy or the size of your enemy, you have the strength to stand up and conquer it!

Just because someone is bigger than you or smarter than you or has more money than you does not give them the right to belittle you. You may be small, but you are feisty and you should stand up for what you believe in -- no matter how big the enemy.

4. Exercise is good.

It doesn't matter how you exercise, when you exercise, or what you exercise in. It just matters that you are active. Not just because it's good for your heart, lungs, muscles, mental health, stress relief, makes you feel more energized, etc.

But let's talk about the fact that it allows you to eat those extra fries that I know you really want (okay, maybe that's just me). Also, if you find your groove it can be a lot of fun.

5. Take care of yourself.

Personal hygiene is super important, especially during those sweltering summer months. Shower, put on deodorant, and pay special attention to washing those spots that tend to be a little bit extra stinky. When you're done, be sure you brush your hair.

No one enjoys a poorly kept head of hair. After all, those knots wont go away on their own. Maybe have a kind friend help you out.

6. Study breaks.

Be sure to take study breaks! This is very similar to #2, but a little different. You should take at least a five minute break after twenty minutes of studying, and then a twenty minute break after about two hours of studying.

I know you're cramming -- but this is for your own sanity! It allows you to refresh your mind, give your eyes, neck and brain a much needed break and revival period. This way you can be sure to stay fresh for a full night of studying!

7. Cuddles. Are. Important.

As a baby, we crave being close to our mother, or being skin to skin with another person. As we get older, we should still cater to this natural desire to be in close contact with another person -- especially a loved one and especially when we are stressed, nervous or anxious. It can help relieve some of your stress and make you feel loved instead.

You don't have to cuddle with the same species. Cuddle a cat, a dog, a pillow, a Significant Other, a book (although this may not be too comfortable). Just go find a Cuddle Buddy!

8. Treat Yo' Self.

Yeah, I said it. Treat. Yo'. Self. It's so important. Even if you're on a budget, find some way to give yourself a little prize. Go to the beach, take some photos, write a poem, get take out, a movie night with your significant other, that ice cream that you probably don't need but have been wanting to try for a really long time or even a nap!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
