Cartoons have been an essential past time for any child growing up in the 90's. Some of those children became inspired to make their own cartoon series as adults. The 2000's have shown an amazing array of new cartoons created by animators, who have grown up with the same old classic cartoons. You're never too old to enjoy cartoons; there will always be animators out there who loved cartoons and were inspired to make incredible cartoons of their own. These are some modern cartoons today that are definitely worth checking out:
1. Adventure Time
Adventure Time is one of the earliest cartoons in this modern era of animation when it first aired back in 2010. The adventures of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog are based off extravagant plot lines that featured an awesome array of minor character. Each minor character has their own subplots throughout the series. Adventure Time pops up as the standard of modern cartoons because of its use of vibrant colors as well as the simplified style where viewers can focus more on the storyline.
2.Gravity Falls
If you think that cartoons are just for children, then you would be wrong. Gravity Falls is one of my personal favorites to binge watch. It has little hints of pop culture references and Internet tropes. Gravity Falls tells the story of Dipper and Mabel Pines with their mystical adventures in a small town in Oregon for summer vacation. It appears as any casual story in its first season, but immediately gets intense in its second season.
3. Steven Universe
Nothing has blown up in animation for a few years faster than Steven Universe, which itself has a more complex storyline in modern cartoons. In simple terms, it's about a boy named Steven who is looked after by the Crystal Gems as they are on the lookout for any evil doers. There is so much into this series; Rebecca Sugar brought her inspirations from Western cartoons as well as references to Japanese animation.
4. Rick and Morty
For a modern cartoon that is actually more suited for adults, Rick and Morty is the cartoon for a unique type of audience. Gaining a huge following in a small of amount of time, Rick and Morty is a sci-fi cartoon about a drunken genius, Rick Sanchez, causing shenanigans in different universes with his grandson, Morty.
5. Bojack Horseman
Another adult-suited cartoon, Bojack Horseman is a Netflix exclusive. I personally have never watched the series, but in three seasons it has brought amazing reviews. Bojack Horseman gives a unique perspective on personal problems not being resolved in an ideal manner, which makes it appear more realistic than most live-action shows.
6. Wander Over Yonder
Back to a more kid friendly series, Wander Over Yonder is another sci-fi adventure series focused on a person named Wander, who just wants to make friends throughout the galaxy.
7. The Loud House
When it comes to Nickelodeon, Spongebob has always been the top choice until recently with a brand new series known as The Loud House. This tells the story of Lincoln Loud growing up as the only brother in the house with 10 sisters. I enjoyed that the show had that old school feeling. It's a good show for people of all ages to watch, whether you're an only child or have 11 siblings.
8. Avatar: The Legend of Korra
The sequel series to the 2000's classic, Avatar the Last Airbender follows the newest avatar, Korra on her journey to meet the expectations of her predecessor. LoK gives out a more mature vibe that the original series didn't have.
Honorable mentions include: Star vs. The Forces of Evil, The Amazing World of Gumball,Over the Garden Wall, Archer, and Bob's Burger
To whoever says that cartoons are for kids aren't aware of the adults who've grew up watching cartoons. Overall, cartoons is an art that can be under appreciated because not only do you get to enjoy the art aspec, but also the writing and acting. So don't feel guilty about watching cartoons if you're a young adult because sometimes it's alright feeling young again.
