This past year, I decided to embark on the brave new adventure of cooking for myself. Growing up with parents who weren't exactly Master Chefs, I've recently found myself having to start from square one in terms of making sure I don't starve. That being said, a lot of people close to me have found that they're shocked I've even made it this far, and have asked me how I've done it. So, to share with anyone else who may find themselves in the same boat as me, here is my comprehensive list of 10 life hacks when you're newly eating on a budget...
8. Frozen Fruit/Veggies
I truly never realized the genius of this until late in life, but these guys will save you time, money, and the stress of cleaning up rotten food like no other.
7. Plan/Prep Ahead
Having things to grab and go truly makes life simpler and your stomach happier. My roommates make fun of me for buying Uncrustables PB&J's in bulk but I can't tell ya how often they've come in handy...
6. Expand Your Horizons
It's easy to eat the same things all the time. But you'll definitely cut the risk of spending more money on food if you buy things you've never eaten before that go a long way. Indian/Mexican foods that rely heavily on rice and beans are some of the most fun (and not the mention the cheapest) recipes to whip up and last you awhile.
5. Have Your Kitchen Together
Messy cabinets make for a messy life and an even messier budget.
4. Sub Proteins
Limit how much meat you buy in order to cut costs. Sub for any other type of protein- tofu, beans- what have you. It's a life saver.
3. Mix It All Together
Nothing wrong with a little "Everything In the Kitchen" omelette every once in awhile.
2. Cook Big Portions
Make a game out of how long you can make the leftovers last. It's a blast.
1. Don't Ever Shop When Hungry
Like....just don't it. You'll regret it later. And always have a list. You'd be surprised how well that works.
