8 Hours In Chicago

A Found Text Poem.

8 Hours In Chicago
Pat Quinn

The poem below is a found text poem created using several newspaper articles and an interview with a local Chicagoan. In the wake of issues surrounding gun violence in schools, attention also needs to be drawn to gun violence in neighborhoods and the effect that it has on individuals living in those areas and surrounding areas as well.

Chicago is one of the most segregated cities in America. It’s unfortunate that most of the crimes happen in neighborhoods you could draw circles around.

Until you can’t.

Earlier, a man was shot in a playground

inside the Dearborn Homes housing development

on the South Side

Officers searched the playground equipment

to see if any bullets remained

lodged in the plastic.

They found one stuck in the roof of a slide

and another in a pole holding up the playset.

It was lucky no children were outside playing at the time.

In May, a boy was shot dead. This was November.

If you’re on the Red Line going South and you hit numbers, just get off the train.

A shooting downtown on a Red Line train

marked the beginning of

a violent eight-hour period.

A man was shot. A woman was shot.

The death toll was high.

A basketball cap and a cellphone were left lying on the sidewalk

next to drops of blood.

A woman said she was doing laundry

and heard about eight gunshots.

The only reason you get on the Orange Line is to go to Midway. Generally, just stay off the Green Line. The Green Line goes places you probably don’t want to go.

Another man was shot dead.

He died of multiple gunshot wounds

on Thursday,

police said.

The attack set off a panic.

Other shootings in the following hours (a bulleted list)

Another man was shot dead

During open-fire on the Dan Ryan Expressway

Two cars were driving erratically

when shots were fired late Thursday afternoon

A woman and child were injured

His death was pronounced a homicide

He had three gunshot wounds.

Don’t go South of the Museum Campus and don’t go West of Western. (It used to be don’t go West of Ashland, then it was don’t go West of Damen, now it’s don’t go West of Western).

Another man was shot.

Officers found him after responding to a call.

He is now in serious condition.

Three more people were shot

near West Garfield Park

in a possible drive-by shooting.

Another man was shot

walking on South Rockwell street

when he heard gunfire

and realized he was hit.

Another was shot

And another

And another

And another

Three ambulances left in succession.

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

From sea to shining sea, the United States was uniquely positioned for an incredible Aurora Borealis display on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, going into Friday, Oct. 11.

It was the second time this year after an historic geomagnetic storm in May 2024. Those Northern Lights were visible in Europe and North America, just like this latest rendition.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
