People always ask me “what’s the one thing you miss most while being away at school?” My immediate answer is always food.
Coming from an Italian family where food is absolutely everything, when I don’t miss my family or friends my mind wanders to all the exclusive hot dog joints, Italian beefs, and of course, my Nana’s best dish: homemade pasta.
While you all can’t dine on the daily at the “casa della mia nonna”, here’s a simple guide to my must-try, classic Chicago eats that you don’t want to miss (because I certainly do.)
1. Portillo’s
For all you non-Chicagoan’s out there, Portillo’s is the epitome of classic American food (aka anything fried and delicious.) With 33 locations in the Chicago-land area, this is without a doubt a must-try destination. Order anything from beefs, hot dogs with EVERYTHING, French fries WITH cheese, and of course the chocolate cake shake, and your dreams might come true.
2. Romano’s (Romano Brands)
First tip: cash only. My dad has taken me to the one of a kind Italian eatery since I was a little girl. Panzerotti, cannoli, calzones, and arancini are a must order- if you don’t know what those are, look them up in the Italian dictionary.
3. Gene and Jude’s
While Chicago is known for its deep dish pizza, unarguably, Chicago has the best hot dogs in the country. The Chicago style hot dog, topped with only mustard, onions, relish, sport peppers and fresh cut fries placed on top, is unique in its limited approach. Also, do NOT ask for ketchup.
4. El Burrito Tapatio
No matter what name it might hold, El B has always been the neighborhood late night burrito stop with undoubtedly authentic fast Mexican cuisine.
5. Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria
The war of the Chicago style deep dish vs. New York style thin crust may never been resolved, but if you’re looking for the best in Chicago, Lou Malnati’s is the way to go. Layers of gooey mozzarella cheese, tangy tomato sauce, and buttery crust leave you wholly satisfied.
6. Johnnie’s Beef
Want more Italian beef? Then look no further. The Best Italian Beef in Chicago, hands down. There might be a line, but it’s definitely worth the wait.
7. Paradise Pup
Unbeatable char cheddar burgers and three layer fries. Guy Fieri approved.
8. Mario’s’ Italian Lemonade
From Pina Colada and watermelon to classic lemon, this small stand has any flavor you might want out of an Italian ice. This homemade delicacy is located conveniently in Little Italy and serves as a little local treasure in the area.
