8 Happy Thoughts For When You're Feeling Down

The days are getting shorter, winter is right around the corner, and the semester is in full swing. So it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit blue when the sun sets earlier and the weather grows chilly. With these 8 happy thoughts, you can cure those seasonal blues.

1. Getting off the plane in your home city.

Just the thought of your plane landing in your home city after a long stretch away at school or a long vacation is enough to warm the heart. The thought of home is comforting and can instantly brighten your day.

2. The first day of summer.

There is no greater feeling than finishing your last final of the spring semester, signifying the start of summer. The first day of summer is a day of hope, potential, and anticipation about what’s to come in the future. Living every day with that mindset will surely cure those seasonal blues.

3. The smell of the air after it rains.

Everyone knows that smell – it’s fresh, clean. Rain washes away what was, presenting a clean slate for what could be.

4. Seeing your dog for the first time in months.

Whenever you’re feeling down, just picture your dog’s face when he sees you when you come home from school for the first time since summer. It’s the purest form of joy and will never fail to put a smile on your face.

5. Coffee.

Caffeine is a stimulant, so just the thought of coffee should cheer you up. And while it’s on your mind, go pour yourself a cup.

6. Daydreaming about all your goals and dreams.

Dreams are necessary. By giving all of your hopes, dreams, and goals a whole lot of thought, you’re making plans to make them come true. But don’t forget to work for those dreams, too.

7. Dessert.

Ice cream, cookies, cake, pie, frozen yogurt. Dessert exists. Does it get any better than that?

8. Your favorite books, television show, and music.

Your favorite forms of entertainment can make your heart the happiest. Just the thought of them can bring a smile to your face. While you’re at it, crack open that book you’ve read a thousand times, watch your favorite episode of your favorite TV show, and put your all-time favorite song on repeat.

These few happy thoughts can instantly brighten your mood. Change in seasons, weather, and circumstances isn’t easy, but knowing what makes you happy is a necessary part of fighting those blues.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
