8 First Tattoo Ideas For Millennials

You may as well get tattooed, too.

Tattoos are the new black.

Literally. It’s not uncommon for our young generation to have at least one if not ten tattoos by the time they’re 21. Other generations see it as a “phase”, but we see it as art. A way to express ourselves, and a way to tell a story.

For those of you looking to tell your own story by getting your first tattoo, here are some pretty cool ideas to get you started:

1. Small, basic tattoos

The cool thing about these is exactly what they’re called - they’re small and basic. They can go really anywhere and stand for many different things. Infinity signs have been very popular in our generation, as well as some shapes and some smaller words. They are easy to cover up, too, just in case your job requires so.

2. Parents names

I’d never advise getting someone’s names tattooed on you unless they are a permanent and positive part of your life. Your parents will be a forever aspect of your life, and they gave you that life. So hey, why not start out by getting a tattoo in honor of two (or one) permanent people?

3. Something meaningful

If you’re like me, you have your own unique design with it’s own story. I got a triceratops on my foot to represent my grandpa. Why a triceratops? Because a triceratops exhibit was the last place he took me before he passed away from cancer. I also have his last name engraved underneath along with a few flowers with watercolor surrounding the triceratops. Each flower stands for a family member that has stood by my side through hardships and the watercolor represents their brightness and small, yet meaningful impact on my life.

4. A cross

Most of the people that I know are religious. If this applies to you with Christianity, then here’s a cool idea: A cross. In today’s world, it’s easy to forget that there’s a higher being watching over us and taking care of us every day. Yeah, bad things happen, but a cross is a good reminder that you have someone that looks after you every day.

5. Flowers

Flowers are a no-brainer. Roses are the most popular. They can really stand for about anything you’d like and hey, as far as I’ve known, flowers never go out of style.

6. Birds

What else says cute and common like these birds? They, too, can stand for many different things and can be placed just about anywhere on the body.

7. Dog tattoos

Dogs are our best friends. What better way to always keep them with us then getting their names tattooed on us? The little paw prints are common, too. Plus, they let everyone know where your priorities are at and to be honest, I’m be pretty damn proud.

8. Small phrases

These are really common also! We all have phrases we say pretty often and tell ourselves every day. Some remind us, some tell a story, and some just make a statement.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
