1. “If things start happening, don’t worry, don’t stew, just go right along and you’ll start happening too.”

Not everything in life can be sunshine and rainbows. Bad things will happen to us whether we deserve it or not. We can't always control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to these things. A small portion of our stress comes from the actual stress, while the majority comes from how our body perceives the stress. Taking a step back an objectifying the situation can help us think rational thoughts and deal with unfortunate events better.

2. “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Life is too damn short to hold anything back. Be goofy, be courageous, be strong, be yourself. If you ever feel like you have to act/be a certain way around people, then they aren't worth your time. People come in and out of our lives quicker than we realize. Don't hold on to toxic friendships/relationships because you'll look back and regret all the time and emotional energy wasted on not saying how you truly felt.

3. "You have brains in your head. you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose".

You are smart! You are capable of making your own decisions. There is always going to be pressure from family, friends, professors, and society to do a certain thing, or be a certain person. You determine your own destiny!

4. “You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”

No one really knows what the future holds. Planning for the future is important, but there needs to be a proper balance. If you are too caught up in future, you wont be able to enjoy the present. Most importantly, be open to change and take every phase of life by the rains. Its easy to exist, but how many of us are living? Instead of waking up thinking of things you must do, start off by thinking about what you want to accomplish today, and create a balance between the must-dos and want-to-dos.

5.“When you think things are bad. when you feel sour and blue. when you start to get mad…you should do what I do! Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky! Some people are much more…oh, ever so much more…oh, muchly much-much more unlucky than you!”

Gratitude is easily forgotten. If you are reading this article right now, you have plenty to be thankful for. Shelter, warmth, clothing, and food are basic essentials not everyone can provide for themselves. Sometimes we can get so carried away with things we want and forgot to appreciate the things we have.

6. "I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells".

When was the last time you acted silly? In America, life is much more fast paced than the rest of the world. Not everything we do has to be "for a reason". Sometimes its necessary to do something just because we want to. Working hard is essential, but it can burn you out. There is more to life than work, work, work. And taking breaks can actually increase your motivation to do great work.

7. “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”

Don't underestimate your power to impact others lives. Think about the person who you admire the most? I bet someone is thinking the same thing about you too. You are important in this world, even if you don't feel like you are.

8. "And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.) KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!"

This is by far my favorite quote from "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss. Never underestimate your ability to make an impact on this world. If you put your heart and mind into something, you can achieve your dreams. You can do things you never thought you could, like move mountains. Never lose hope of your dreams and don't lose sight of who you are. You are amazing and wonderful and you can succeed in life, however "success" applies to you!

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
