With Donald Trump winning the New Hampshire primary, it is clear that his intentions of being the Republican candidate are not far from becoming a reality. His tactics of speaking his mind and drawing attention to himself are catching the ears and eyes of many voters across the country. The problem with all this attention is that it's not always working out in his favor, and it is continuously being noticed by the public.
1. "Our country is in serious trouble. We don't have victories anymore. We used to have victories, but we don't have them. When was the last time anybody saw us beating, let's say, China in a trade deal? I beat China all the time. All the time."
Trump views international relations the same way he views the other aspects of his life--as a competition. This may come from all the time that he spent hosting "The Apprentice," but it is now carrying over into politics. By using his political actions as ways to get ahead, Trump alludes to a future in which he will focus his attention on making America the best country in the world and beating everyone else rather than seeing to the welfare of its people.
2. "The worst thing a man can do is go bald. Never let yourself go bald."
Trump may need to sit in on a biology class if he believes that baldness is a choice. It should be a red flag when the potential leader of our country claims that a change in appearance would be the worst move he could make. This leads the people to believe that if in office, Trump would be more concerned with himself and his own personal affairs than running the country.
3. "I've said if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her."
Politicians, particularly the president, are some of the most criticized people when it comes to social relations. This response to his daughter's photo shoot for Playboy is not the first time Trump has made a remark about his attractive daughter, and it is nothing short of uncomfortable and immoral. Aside from being completely immoral, extramarital affairs have gotten presidents in trouble in the past, and Trump is no exception.
4. "I'm too trusting. And when they let me down, if they let me down, I never forget."
These are the words that Donald Trump used to describe his biggest weakness. Aside from sounding like a supervillain threatening his enemies, this says a lot about his foreign policy plan. In this menacing statement, he is implying that he will either be too involved in other countries' affairs (or vice versa) until something goes awry. Then any form of a relationship with any country will be destroyed with no hopes of mending, which is a recipe for chaos and self-destruction of our country.
5. "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, okay? It's like incredible."
Though he may be trying to boast his success, he is backhandedly making fun of the average voter. He is implying that he is so ignorantly supported by the people that regardless of what he does, he will still be the front-runner of the Republican Party. Insulting the voters isn't the best way to gain their approval, but that doesn't seem to faze Trump.
6. "Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president? I mean, she's a woman, and I'm not supposed to say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?"
During any election season, candidates will slander their opponents in ways to make themselves appear to be the better choice. In this case, Trump takes it too far when stating that we should not vote for Republican candidate Carly Fiorina simply for her physical appearance. If he decided to pick his staff based on looks alone rather than knowledge and experience, it's hard to say who will end up in his cabinet.
7. "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he got captured. I like people who weren't captured."
This was Trump's response to former prisoner of war John McCain during an interview on ABC's "This Week." What he's really saying is yes, even if a man risks his life to fight for our country, he'll only gain Trump's respect by coming out unharmed. Veterans are some of the most highly respected people in our country, but not to Donald Trump.
8. "Free trade is terrible. Free trade can be wonderful if you have smart people. But we have stupid people."
Trump is discussing free trade, which is a form of trade that happens on its own with no tariffs or restrictions. He claims that it could work if smart people were implementing the system, and in America's case, they are not. He is insulting his voters by saying that they are too stupid to handle a basic trade system.
