If your Christmas break just started or you still have a few days to go, here are eight movies you should check out. Chick flicks, rom-coms, or whatever else you might call them are some of the best movies out there in my opinion. So pop some popcorn, find a comfy spot, and get watching!
1. Sweet Home Alabama
Y'all, I think that "Sweet Home Alabama" might be my favorite movie ever. Maybe it's because the town portrayed in the movie reminds me of my hometown. Up and coming fashion designer, Melanie Carmichael, suddenly finds herself engaged to the most eligible bachelor in New York. Unfortunately, Melanie has skeletons in her designer filled closet that include Jake- her high school sweetheart that refuses to divorce her. Determined to sever her ties and get away from her past once and for all, Melanie returns home to Alabama. But, as everyone knows, home is where the heart is, and Melanie realizes that the life she left behind was much better for her than her life up north.
2. Mean Girls
My boyfriend can quote "Mean Girls" word for word. It's quite a talent. I'm still working on getting him to put it on his resume. Cady Heron was homeschooled by her parents when they lived in Africa, but then they moved to America and she was sent to public school for the first time. Cady quickly learns that the cliques are very tightly knit. She unknowingly ends up in the good graces of the most popular girls in school, called "The Plastics". Cady soon sees for herself why they were given the nickname, and has to decide if she belongs in their 'Mean Girl' clique.
3. Pretty Woman
A modern version of Cinderella, a prostitute and a wealthy business man fall for each other, becoming an unlikely pair. After Edward hires Vivian to stay with him for the weekend, the two get closer, only to discover there are significant hurdles to overcome as they try to connect their very different worlds to be together.
4. Legally Blonde
Elle Woods has it all. There's just one thing she wants, and that's to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. The two things stopping him from proposing: he feels she is too blonde, and he's headed to Harvard for law school. Elle rallies all her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win him back and get a ring by spring.
5. Titanic
A love story doomed by the Atlantic Ocean. 101-year-old Rose Calvert tells of her experience on the Titanic, as well as her emotional connection with a starving artist named Jack Dawson. 84 years after the night the Ship of Dreams sank, Rose begins telling her story to her granddaughter and ocean explorers, starting with her memories.
6. Miss Congeniality
When a terrorist threatens to bomb the Miss United States Pageant, the FBI rushes to find a female agent to go undercover as a contestant. Unfortunately, Gracie is the only female agent who can look the part, despite her lack of femininity. Gracie prides herself in being "one of the boys", but after severe pageant training and actually meeting some of the girls, she decides she can deal with being chosen for this mission.
7. Pretty In Pink
Andie comes from the not so wealthy side of town. When she isn't at work, school or hanging out with her best friend, Duckie, she is taking care of her father. Then, her world gets flipped upside down when a rich, popular boy named Blaine starts flirting with her. After a few days, Blaine decides to ask Andie to the prom, and she happily accepts. Pressured by his friend to recognize the social class differences between the two of them, Blaine backs out last minute. Andie goes to prom anyway, and her and Duckie make up (they had gotten into a huge fight). Blaine shows up to reconcile as well, and Duckie encourages Andie to go and work things out with him.
8. Breakfast At Tiffany's
Holly Golightly doesn't belong to anything or anyone. She's a flighty girl who expects money for the powder room as well as for cab fare in exchange for her companionship. She feels as though the only way to make her life great is to marry rich. Then, a poor writer named Paul moves into her apartment complex, and they become friends. Over the course of the movie, Paul falls for Holly, and wants her to be happy, but knows he can't give her the lifestyle she desires. Paul is willing to change just to be with her and make her happy.
