It's cold. It gets dark at 4 p.m. and everyone always says there's nothing to do in the winter. Here is a list of things to do in Maine to make the best of your winter in the cheapest way possible.

1. Portland Museum of Art

The Portland Museum of Art offers free entrance on every Friday from 5pm to 9pm. This is a great way to get out and check out the local art.

2. First Friday Art Walk

Every first Friday of the month, the city of Portland will host an art walk where many different artist can show off their work.

3. Comedy Night

A popular place to see live comedy is at Bull Feeney's in Portland on Wednesday nights. The admission is $5.

4. Snowshoeing at Smiling Hill Farm


There are snowshoeing rentals and cross-country skiing rentals at Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook. The prices are as low as $16 per person.

5. Check out a local high school play

There are so many high schools in Maine that have many talented performers. The admission for non-students is usually as cheap as $5.

6. Snow tubing

Instead of paying to rent a sledding tube and go down a man madesledding trail, find a hill anywhere.

7. Ice Skating

Another great opportunity to find your own place. Check out any ponds you've seen throughout the other seasons and check to see if it has frozen over.

8. Brewery Tours

Maine is known for all of their local beers. Why not do a taste test? Brewery tours can be fairly cheap and fun to do with a bunch of friends.
