8 Books You Should Read This Summer

Don't get me wrong; I love laying out on the beach or by my pool, but I have a tendency of getting bored. I can only nap for so long or listen to my summer playlist so many times before the boredom gets to me. I love to read, but I never have time to read for pleasure during the school year. Here's a list of books on my summer reading list -- both classic summer reads and new releases.

1. "The Summer I Turned Pretty," by Jenny Han.

This is my favorite series to read in the summer! The series follows Isabel, "Belly" for short, through summers that she spends with her brother, her mom, and her mom's best friend with two sons.

2. "Me Before You," by Jojo Moyes.

Soon to be a movie, the book tells the story of Louisa, a girl in need of a job, who becomes a caretaker for Will, a man who has become disabled from an unfortunate accident. The romantic movie is set to come out in theaters on June 3.

3. "Unashamed," by Lecrae.

Lecrae has had his share of pain in this world -- childhood abuse, drugs, alcoholism, an abortion, time in rehab, and an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Now, as a successful artist sharing the gospel through rap, Lecrae answers questions, responds to critics, shares personal journal entries, and models what it means to be a disciple in a secular world.

4. "See Me," by Nicholas Sparks.

Nicholas Sparks' books are just the best summer reads. Colin is giving his second chance all he's got. With a history of violence and bad decisions, the threat of prison is stalking him, so he's focused on getting his teaching degree. Maria is the daughter of Mexican immigrants with a Duke law degree and a job at Wilmington. Even though she's the picture of success, she has a traumatic past of her own. A chance encounter brings the two of them together. Will love grow around the demons of their pasts?

5. "Pride and Prejudice," by Jane Austen.

This is definitely one of my favorite books. If you've seen the movie, but haven't read it, I would highly recommend it!

6. "Made to Crave," by Lysa Terkeurst.

A dear friend recommended this book to me a few summers ago, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. This book goes through a woman's desire to be healthy but her lack of the spiritual empowerment to do it. We were made to crave God; He designed us that way. If you're struggling with bad habits, the "I'll start Monday" cycle, then this is the book for you.

7. "Esther: It's Tough Being a Woman," by Beth Moore.

Beth Moore leads the reader on a journey through Esther in this nine-week Bible study. If you've ever felt inadequate, threatened or pushed into an overwhelming situation, this is the book for you.

8. "#Struggles," by Craig Groeschel.

I bought this book around Christmas and have yet to finish it because the topics Groeschel discusses take some time to digest. He's the pastor of the church that created the YouVersion Bible app. In his book he talks about following Jesus in a world that is so focused on social media and selfishness. With topics such as envy, cultivating intimacy and cultivating gratitude amidst social media, this book is truly life-changing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
