Holidays are the time to sit by the fire, grab some coffee and read a good book for once in your life. Here are 12 suggestion to get you started:
1. Why Not Me? By Mindy Kaling
In Mindy's second book she bring her usual humor and wit, along with some good advice. Its a perfect holiday book because it doesn't require too much thought but has a whole lot of heart. From stories about her time on The Office writing staff (and lets be honest any reason to talk about The Office is a good reason to read something) to her experiences living surrounded by celebrities her book brightens a cold snowy afternoon without forcing you to do any work at all.
2. The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
If you like to hear about other people's drama and family stories, but don't like to get involved in your own read this book. Not only will you get to read about the somewhat stressful, but always interesting life of the Plumb family, you will get to avoid your family because whenever they ask you to intervene you can tell them you just need to finish this one sentence (but of course you will just continue to read and ignore whatever problem is unfolding).
3.The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson
If you'v ever wondered if you or someone you know (looking at you kid who always whispers creepy things to himself during class) is a psychopath The Psychopath Test is not only a great read to info, but its pretty funny too. Journalist Jon Ronson goes around interviewing possible psychopaths as well as explores tests that are used clinically to diagnose psychopaths. It will give you some closure on your questions about questionable friends and relatives, and teach you a thing or two about what a psychopath really is.
4. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
If you are at all interested in how a blind girl could navigate her way through Paris and other areas of France during the second world war this book is worth a read. Imagine going through WWII in general, and then close your eyes and imagine doing it in the dark.
5. Food a Love Story by Jim Gaffigan
If you've never heard of Jim Gaffigan you should know up front he's a comedian with some great stand up. Anyway, whether you know him or not you should check out his book "Food a Love Story" and laugh as you read about the various adventures, and many misadventures and opinions he has on food. Food is pretty much the best thing there is so if you have to take a break from eating it yourself, why not keep it around by reading about someone else eating it.
6. Everything is Perfect When You Are A Liar by Kelly Oxford
Before you read this book check out Kelly Oxford's Twitter and Snapchat and you will want to read every word as fast as possible. Oxford, a Canada native, writes about her time as a rebellious youth and tells funny stories about being a dumb kid like the rest of us, but of course she does it in a way thats funny, interesting, and captivating that most of us could never do.
7. The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan
Although the story behind this book of short stories and essays is heartbreaking the stories in it offer so much more. Just after graduating from Yale the writer Marina Keegan was killed in a car accident and her family and teachers then had her stories published in The Opposite of Loneliness. From stories of a group of people stuck in a submarine to a girl grieving the death of her "short of boyfriend" Marina captured what its like to be a person that is equally happy and lonely all at once.
8. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Whether you had to read this in school and you've now forgotten the plot or you've never heard of it The Outsiders is the kind of book that you put on your Bucket List. Ever heard someone say "Stay Gold Ponyboy"? It comes from this book and after you read you will see why so many people like to quote it.
