1. Sleeping in your own bed every night
No amount of mattress toppers could compare to the comfort of my bed at home.
2. Home cooked meals
You don't have to eat at the dining hall every night and can also avoid the freshman 15.
3. Staying connected with people at home.
You stay in touch with people in your hometown more than you do if you live on campus.
4. You have all the same opportunities
A lot of people worry about not getting involved as a commuter, but you meet just as many friends and can get involved in as many other extracurriculars that you want.
5. You still gain your independence.
College is all about learning who you are and adjusting to life in general. My parent have still given me my independence even though I am still at home. Yes, they want to know where I'm going and what time I'm going to be home, but I am free to go to the same places that I would if I stayed on campus.
6. You don't have to pack up to come home.
I don't have to pack a suitcase or duffel bag to come home every weekend, and if you hate packing as much as I do, then that's definitely a blessing.
7. Avoiding the party scene
No matter what school you attend, there is always this certain crowd. With commuting, you don't have to worry about getting woken up at all hours of the night or having disturbances when you're trying to study.
8. Save money
This reason should not be the sole reason why someone chooses to commute. However, it is definitely a factor. Tuition is expensive, and if you think that commuting could work for you, then this is absolutely a benefit. When you commute, you have extra money to put towards other things that you want and/or need
Before starting college, I wasn't sure how I would like commuting, if I know now that is was the best decision for me. Everyone is different and has various preference. When thinking through your decision, weigh the pros and cons. Pray about it. You will make the right decision.
