Everyone loves making New Year's Resolutions, but sometimes we can get upset if we fail to succeed in accomplishing our goals for the new year. Instead of pushing yourself to follow harsh rules and standards for the new year, focus on more basic and healthy resolutions!

1. Quitting Bad Habits

Whether it be as simple as not biting your nails or something more complex such as quitting smoking, try to leave your bad habits in the previous year! You'll feel so good when you can say you used to do that.

2. Spending Less Time On Your Phone

I know, it's hard for us millennials to not Snapchat everything we're doing. But please try to just put your phone down when eating dinner or having a conversation. Instagram isn't going anywhere.

3. Staying Active

This is probably the most common New Year's resolution. Instead of getting mad at yourself for eating that donut or becoming obsessed with the number on your scale, simply take your dog for a walk or shovel some snow. This is exercise, too!

4. Appreciate The Little Things

Be grateful for all that you have! Sure, there may be people who have more than you but think about all the people who don't even have family or a place to live. Tell your loved ones how much you love them and think about how lucky you are to just be living.

5. Drink More Water

A nice, ice cold glass of water is simply amazing. Drink more water to stay hydrated, it even helps your skin stay clear and is obviously way healthier to drink than soda or alcohol! Water is the ultimate thirst-quencher.

6. Go To Bed Early

Everyone needs more sleep in their life. Even if you aren't tired yet, try getting into bed earlier than usual just so you can relax. I guarantee you'll fall asleep sooner than you think. Having a good night's sleep is such an important thing so you can feel happy and energized to take on the day!

7. Focusing On Your Goals

Stop comparing yourself to others and just focus on doing your own thing. I promise if you stop caring about what others think of you, you'll be so much happier. Write down a list of all your short-term and long-term goals and you'll feel amazing when you get to check them off.

8. Be Happy!

Start smiling! Don't be afraid to laugh just because you think you'll look silly, laughter and happiness are contagious and you will feel amazing making others laugh and smile. Enjoy your life and make others happy as well!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
