When someone is thinking about getting a new pet, they mainly consider getting a cat or dog. But, there are so many great pets that aren't cats or dogs. There are many animals that are just as smart and easy to train. They are equally as lovable and have unique personalities. Coming from someone who has 12 pet chickens, I highly suggest looking into different kinds of animals to have as a pet. As a huge animal lover myself, these are my eight suggestions.

(Warning: This article contains enormous amounts of cuteness).

1. Bunny

How adorable are bunnies? They make excellent pets because they are quiet and don't require much space. If you live in a small house or apartment, a bunny is a perfect fit. They can be trained to use a litter box and can even do obstacle courses. They are also very clean pets, they just need to be brushed a few times a week. Bunnies are very friendly and grow attached to their owner. Who wouldn't want to snuggle with a bunny?

2. Pig

Did you know pigs are smarter than dogs? Pigs are highly intelligent and easily trainable. You can teach them house training, tricks, but when you train them, make sure you train them with food! Even though pigs have a dirty reputation, they are actually clean pets. They use mud as a skin care, so make sure you have a big backyard for them. Pigs are actually very similar to dogs, they bark when they detect danger, and squeal when they want to say hello.

3. Chicken

As a chicken owner myself, chickens are amazing pets to own. They are friendly, smart, and affectionate to their owners. The benefit of owning chickens (if you have females) is that you get fresh eggs everyday. People may not realize it, but chickens recognize their names and have wonderful personalities. They grow attached to their owners and will follow you around. If you keep up with cleaning their coop, they are not extremely messy. And you can dress them up in clothes!

4. Duck

Ducks are very similar to pet chickens. They are sociable, smart, and love to learn tricks. You can teach them how to give kisses! You need a pond or kiddie pool for your duck, they love to swim. If you wanted both ducks and chickens, they actually get along really well. Just make sure that you keep them protected from predators, like hawks or raccoons. It is extremely important to make sure they are safe.

5. Rat

Yes, rats are actually amazing pets to have. I'm not saying the ones you find on the subway, but local adoption centers have domesticated rats. They are intelligent, very clean, and very affectionate. They are low maintenance, but need a lot of exercise. Make sure you have fun toys and tubes for your rat to use. Rats form strong bonds with their owners and have a sweet temperament. Rats have a bad stigma against them, but if we look beyond that, they are sweet pets to own.

6. Hedgehog

Hedgehogs have just recently been introduced as great pets. They are small, quiet, and are good choices for those with allergies. They are not aggressive by nature, but do be cautious of their prickles. They use them as a defensive mechanism, but once they warm up to as an owner, they don't use them as much. Their cage only requires weekly cleaning, and it's important to clip their nails. They are curious animals and like to cuddle!

7. Bearded Dragon

Interested in owning a reptile? A bearded dragon is one of the most popular reptile options. They recognize their owner's face, voice, and touch. They can be handled by anyone, even children. They are even tempered and kind to their owners. The fun thing about breaded dragons is that they come in many different colors and patterns. They can even change their shade of color due to temperature changes. They also communicate through color changes. How cool is that?

8. Guinea Pig

If you have never owned a pet before and want something easy to take care of, a guinea pig is a great option. They mainly need a cage, with fresh water, hay, and food. Guinea pigs are generally healthy animals and have a good personality. One thing you'll notice with a guinea pig is they like to "pop." When they become happy or excited, they jump in the air or run fast back and forth. It is very entertaining to watch!

Of course, it is important to keep in mind that every animal is individually unique. Continue to do your research on which animal is the best option for you to own. All pets require love and care, so make sure you are 100% certain you are ready for a new pet before you welcome a new family member into your home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
