  1. Zika Virus is the first sexually-transmitted mosquito-borne disease. The virus can be transferred from an infected mosquito to a human through a bite, or from an infected human to a mosquito through a bite, but it can also be transferred from human to human.
  2. Out of 176 types of mosquitoes only 2 types can be carriers of Zika. These types are found in 41 states, but cases have only appeared in Florida. 18,800 cases have occurred in the US and it’s territories. Florida has 70 local cases.
  3. 18 babies have been born with defects caused by Zika virus. The virus infects the fetus, disrupting cell growth and killing neurons in the brain. This is the cause of Microcephaly in infected newborns.
  4. Most people think Zika only affects babies and pregnant woman, but that is not true. Men and women can get Zika, as well. The virus can cause neurological problems and depression in adults.
  5. Anyone can be a carrier of Zika, and some might not even know. Only one out of 5 infected people will have symptoms.
  6. Zika has been around since 1947. It was discovered during research for yellow fever.
  7. There is no vaccine, so prevention is of utmost importance in combating Zika.

As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life.
