It's undeniable that our generation is obsessed with media. We're constantly on our phones, texting or checking Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. It's inescapable. It's also scary to think how much time we waste just sitting around on our phones. So I think we should emphasize how important it is to simply unplug once in a while, and focus on what's happening around you.
1. Backpack or hike.
Now that we're in warmer weather, there are a lot more options for outdoor activities. Grab some friends, drive 30 minutes to an hour, and find a nice trail to hike. It's refreshing and a lot of fun. Plus you'll make memories with your friends.
2. Have a cookout.
It's cliche, but nothing beats a good ole backyard cookout. Unless, of course, you're not from here. In that case, go out to the park, and make a pit stop by Walmart for the hamburgers, hotdogs, and the unforgettable bug spray.
3. Read a book.
I'm sure all of us have pointed at some novel and said we wanted to read it. Well, now is your chance. Kick back, break out the hammock, and bask in the relaxation.
4. Plan a trip.
Maybe the backpacking isn't cutting it for you, and I can't say I blame you. Start saving pennies if you have to, but plan a trip with your friends. Whether it be for next week, next month, or next year, start busting out the calculator and configuring some kind of budget for your tropical vacation.
5. Journal.
I know a lot of people don't like to write, but trust me, you will never regret journaling. Just writing once in a while when you have some free time gives you a nice little memento to look back on one day, and you'll know exactly what was going on in your life at a certain time.
6. Exercise.
Now, I'm not talking about the gym. I like to do this little thing where I trick myself into thinking I'm not exercising. Hiking is definitely one of those ways, but biking is a lot of fun too. And if you don't own a bike, see if your school rents them out at the rec center. Chances are they probably do, so grab one, and start riding everywhere.
7. Volunteer.
This is yet another painful cliche, but two words: Animal Shelter. You get to play with puppies while simultaneously de-stressing, and, not to mention, getting some service hours, which look great on a resume. It's a win-win, really.
Let's face it, how important are our constant checks on the happenings of the internet? Not very. I mean, don't get me wrong, the internet and all of our nifty devices are wonderful, but there comes a point when we just need to take a break and focus on the here and the now for the sake of our mental health. Just set your phone down for a bit and see what happens. Carpe diem, folks.
