Every semester, I set myself a goal. But, much like resolutions on New Year’s, sometimes those goals last a few weeks before they are scrapped. However, for spring semester 2016, I set perhaps my most successful goal ever. I challenged myself to dress well every single day, and now I am going to challenge you to do the same thing. I can assure you that it will change your life.
1. Buy versatile items.
I understand that sometimes you have to splurge on that shirt that goes perfectly with your dark jeans. However, if every piece in your wardrobe maintains its usefulness only when in conjunction with a single other piece, you are wasting your money. When purchasing a jacket, look for more muted colors that go with everything, such as grey or dark blue, in order to maximize their versatility. Have one or two wild items to keep things exciting, but make sure your closet is compatible.
2. Find the perfect fit.
“Baggy” is never a compliment. If you are a relatively lanky person like myself, an over-sized garment only accentuates this fact. I’m not advocating clothing that looks painted on or jeans that prevent any and all movement. However, I see no harm in trying on the smaller size, because that “fitted” look not only makes you look better, but it also makes the item seem of a higher quality.
3. Tuck it in.
Gents, do you want to look instantly better? Then tuck your shirt in. A tucked-in button-down or polo not only sharpens up your appearance, but can also show off that great belt you have on. Now, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Tucking in your T-shirt is for attending your child’s rec soccer match, not impressing anyone. “But James Dean did it!” James Dean could have worn anything and he would have looked incredible. Not all of us have that luxury. Also, if you tuck anything into cargo shorts, you might as well quit while you’re behind.
4. Be ambitious.
Be creative. Have fun. Looking stylish is about standing out and feeling your best. Get out of your comfort zone and people will notice. If you wear it with confidence, it will work. ‘Nuff said.
5. Be thrifty when you can.
Goodwill, outlet stores and consignment shops are all outstanding resources for strutting on a budget. Look for fabric and fit when shopping at these stores and you will do fine. You might also find some footwear that you like, but be careful to check the soles for dangerous separation. If the glue is starting to break, you won’t be keeping the kicks long.
6. But invest in outerwear.
While the above note is fine for most objects, a good jacket is something you should not skimp on. Burn a few more dollars and purchase yourself a quality leather jacket or pea coat that will last you for years to come. Some jackets will last 20 years if you take good care of them, and there is nothing better than a long lasting article of clothing. Trust me; they are worth the extra money.
7. Finally, match key items.
There are a few items of clothing that should always match. Otherwise, no one will notice them. A man’s belt should always match his shoes, both in color and, if you can pull it off, material. His socks should always match his pants. Finally, his tie should always match his shirt. These simple combinations will not only elevate your style, but also show that this was not a mistake.
I could go on for days. Dressing well is not something that changes overnight, but let me tell you, it’s fun. You will find yourself strutting around with more confidence than ever before. If dressing nice isn’t your thing, I can respect that, but for me it was one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made, and I don’t see myself changing it any time soon.
