7 Ways To Celebrate October

Welcome to Autumn! Here are some ways to enjoy the best month of the year.

The leaves are changing, a chill is in the air, and the taste pumpkin spice adorns pretty much everything. We’ve finally made it to October, which is personally my favorite month of the year. Seeing as it’s the beginning of the month, I’d thought it’d be a good idea to come up with a few tips on how to enjoy the prime of autumn before everything turns to peppermint and evergreen.

1. Go Get Yourself Some Fall Food.

It doesn’t have to be a pumpkin spice latte. My favorite fall food are the freshly fried cinnamon sugar doughnuts that are sold near the pumpkin patch my family goes to. If donuts aren’t your thing, maybe go for the roasted pumpkin seed, baked acorn squash, or a freshly picked apple

2. Make Yourself a Fall Playlist Full of New Songs

It’s a new month, so now may be a good time to mix up your music selection. Bonus points if the music makes you reminisce of golden sunsets and changing leaves. A few songs on my list are The Piano Duet from Corpse Bride and Leaves That Are Green by Simon and Garfunkel.

3. Take a Walk and Crunch as Many Leaves as Possible

Autumn is such a great time to go for walks; there aren’t many bugs, it’s not too hot, and you get that lovely crunching sound as you wade though fallen leaves.

4. Reorganize

Since you’ve been at school for at least a month, now is a good time to look at yourself and make sure you’re on track for the rest of the semester. You might want to get your schedule in order, create a study plan, or get caught up on homework. Now that you know what your classes are going to be like, it’s a good idea to reevaluate how you’re doing in your schoolwork while it’s still early in the semester.

5. Watch a Scary Movie

Even if horror isn’t your thing, now may be a good time to try watching some of the classics, such as The Shining, Poltergeist, or Children of the Corn. Maybe even try a more modern film like Blink or Housebound (both are on Netflix, both are terrifying, both are amazing, watch them if you dare).

6. Wear the Biggest Sweater You Can Find

I love cuddly sweaters. After wearing tank tops all summer, there is nothing better than putting on that first oversized knitted wonder. Be proud sweaters, you are a superior piece of clothing.

7. Read a Book Outside.

Reading a good book out in the open is such a peaceful and relaxing experience, and it may be a while before it is warm enough to do so again. If you really want to get into the spooky October spirit try reading some Stephen King or Agatha Christie. Best enjoyed wearing a large sweater, listening to your fall playlist, and drinking something hot and possibly pumpkiny.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
