7 Ways To Amp Up Your Spring Break At Home

What could be worse than being stuck in your small town hometown for spring break? Probably a lot, actually.

If you find yourself spending spring break at home you may be feeling one of two ways: excited to relax or utterly annoyed at the fact that you're not spending this week long break somewhere on a warm Caribbean island. I find myself feeling that later of the two. I'm from a small town in Pennsylvania where the weather is often very cold and there is not much to do. On my travel home this weekend I contemplated driving straight until I ended up somewhere in South Carolina, but not wanting to disappoint the fam, I chose to go home. Then I found myself thinking about how bored, tired, lonely, and cold I'm about to be for the next week. But being the optimistic (sometimes) person that I am I thought no. I'm not going to spend this week throwing myself a pity party because my plans for Mexico fell through and you shouldn't either. Here are seven ways to amp up your spring vacay at home:

1. Have a spa day.

Go get yourself that mani-pedi you've been dying for and throw in a massage or facial while you're at it! Feel guilty spending money on this? Think of it this way: you would be spending upwards of $1,000 more if you went on that out of country vacation. In the long run, you're saving money!

2. Revive your spring wardrobe.

Pick a day to head into the nearest city or shopping outlet and do some damage to your closet. If you're not getting the chance to feel good on vacation you might as well step it up and look good! Retail therapy does wonders.

3. Take a mini road trip.

Day-long road trips are sometimes the most fun mini-vacations you can take. Something always goes wrong, someone loses something, but you end up with the best memories. Plan a mini road trip or two to an interesting city or town nearby.

4. Get outside.

While the weather may not be 75 and sunny, getting fresh air outdoors is important. As long as there isn't a blizzard or the temperature is negative ten, get outside. Go for a walk or run, go hiking, ride your bike, anything to keep you from going stir crazy indoors.

5. Read a book.

I love reading, but between school, work, and friends I find it hard to commit myself to a new book. Pick up that new book you've been wanting to read for months and relax.

6. Try out your pins.

We're all guilty of pinning a million recipes, DIY projects, and workouts on Pinterest that we never seem to get to. Use your time off to try some of them out, even if they fail. Which let's face it half of the time they do!

7. Catch up on sleep.

Again, between studying, going out, getting up for class, etc. As college students were all guilty of cutting our sleep short. Don't spend your whole break sleeping, but definitely try and catch up on some of those zzz's you've been missing out on for months!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
