We all go to restaurants once in a while. We all are sometimes cranky and don't feel like going out of our way to be polite and kind to our waiters. I decided to discus rude customers with an anonymous waiter who gave me the inside scoop on how being nice to your waiter or waitress actually benefits you.
1. Waiters and waitresses remember nice customers.
And sometimes, it can work out in your favor. The next time you're at the restaurant, you are more likely to be treated better and served faster. The golden rule pays off a lot in life. Put yourself in your waiter or waitress's shoes. What would you do if you were them?
2. Being condescending or disrespectful to your waiter or waitress does not make you look better.
In fact, it actually makes you look worse. If you're out to dinner with someone important, you want to show them your best self. No boss wants to work with someone who is rude to their servers and no significant other wants to date a jerk. Plus, the other people around you are not likely to appreciate your unnecessary rudeness. Don't forget the impressionable children. Make the world a better place and show some respect.
3. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"
Your waiter or waitress has complete access to all of your food. Is it logical to be rude to someone who is handling your food? They can literally do whatever they want. Of course, not all waiters and waitresses are evil and tamper with your food, but there are always a few who would be willing to push the envelope and make sure that your food is not top quality. Being polite and respectful increases your chances of receiving top quality, delicious and satisfying food.
4. Nice treatment of your waiter or waitress often results in better service for you.
If you were a waiter or waitress, would you want to spend all of your time checking on a table that was rude to you, or would you want to spend your time on a table that was polite and kind. Waiters and waitresses humans too and are more likely to spend more time making sure your drinks are filled and your food is to your liking.
5. Waiters and waitresses are people too.
All people deserve to be treated with respect no matter who they are.
6. Being nice can actually get you power.
Yes, being nice to your waiter or waitress can actually get you power. People learn best by learning from example. So why not lead by example and exercise your power of influence. Being nice to your waiter or waitress means that those around you are more likely to respect their waiter or waitress. Just by showing up at a restaurant, you have increased your influential power.
7. You are paying kindness forward.
You may have been a waiter or waitress when you were a teenager. You may be a waiter or waitress as adult, right now. You may be a teenager who is waiting tables to get through college. Someday, you may have a child who is a waiter or a waitress. Somewhere along the line, someone was polite to you and gave you a good tip. Somewhere along the line, someone was kind to you. Somewhere along the line, you may have a child who is a waiter or a waitress. Wouldn't you want someone to be polite to them? Pay the kindness forward to those who wait on your table now.
Waiting tables isn't the easiest job around. The next time you're at a restaurant, make sure to spread around the kindness and make the world a better place.
