Before my senior year of college, I like to believe I was blissfully unaware of the real world. College can really be such a bubble - a great, safe, happy bubble, but a bubble none the less. So when it came to do real adult things, I realized that there are a lot of responsibilities that just aren't fun.
1. Dealing with car insurance
I know next to nothing about car insurance. How much of it do I need? Where should I get it? Can my mom make this decision for me? I got so desperate that I read scary googled articles on it; trust me young people, you do not want to look forward to this.
2. Paying your taxes
Let me tell you, s-t-r-e-s-s-f-u-l. I am pretty nerdy and actually kind of looked forward to this challenge, but in the end it was confusing and worrisome. I even ended up sending mine via snail mail just to make sure they got it because I had a stress dream the internet application failed me. No joke, taxes are no fun.
3. Finding a new place to live
Apartment hunting is just not the same as it was during undergrad. Did you know that most apartments do not have a built in washer and dryer? I for sure didn't. There is one upside to this one though; sometimes when you go tour new apartments, they offer you free candy!
4. Deciding where to take your life
After graduation, your life is just yours. So if you really want to run away and join the peace corps, you totally can right now - which is completely crazy to me. So all the years of talking about what you think you are going to do, culminates into you actually having to make some decisions about your career.
5. Getting graduation stuff in order
You have to get your cap and gown, decide if you are sending out announcements, take pictures, get your parents a place to stay, figure out when all the ceremonies are, get your diploma framed, find out to even get your diploma - the list is endless. I often wish I could just fast forward to the summer and skip this whole graduation nonsense.
6. Making your own doctors appointments
I guess as a 22-year-old, it is not socially accepted that my mother continues to make my doctors appointments, so now I must do that on my own. Unfortunately, that means every doctor - from dermatologists to dentists.
7. Working
Well I do love working, being an adult is just plain tiring and sometimes I would much rather be sleeping than working.
Stay strong out there new adults - you can do this.
