In college where there always seems to be so much going on it can be easy for mental health to take a backseat to everything else that you have to deal with. However, it is important for us to remember that our mental health is just as important as our physical health and our academics. So here are some tips that will hopefully help you take care of your mental health despite a busy lifestyle.

1. Talk to someone.

Too often we feel that we are the only one experiencing the struggles that we have to deal with but this could be further than the truth. Keeping the issues you are dealing with to yourself can make you feel isolated and alone. Whether you are talking to a close and trusted friend or to a professional such as a therapist, talking about your problems can feel like taking the weight off of your shoulders. Talking to others can even allow you to make connections with other people who are dealing with similar things and can let you build or expand your network of support.

2. Do something you love.

Something else that can be great for mental health is just taking time every day or every week even if it is just for an hour to do something that you truly love. This can be anything from a hobby to really any activity that makes you feel relaxed or rejuvenated. Some good suggestions for things to do are drawing or painting, reading, any kind of sport, etc.

3. Take a shower or bath.

Even though we shower every day taking some time to really enjoy a long shower or bath can be very therapeutic after a bad day or week. Many people think most clearly and creatively in the shower where there is nothing else around to distract you.

4. Sleep in.

For any of us with busy schedules even an hour of sleep more than you need can feel like an unnecessary luxury but especially after a particularly stressful week allowing yourself to spend some extra time sleeping can be a great way to recharge. It allows you to wake up refreshed and take on a new day.

5. Hug someone you love.

For many people especially ones that respond to physical touch getting a hug from a friend help turn an entire day around. This hug doesn’t have to even come from a person! Try hugging or snuggling with a furry friend if you aren’t a big fan of hugging other people.

6. Find something to laugh at.

Having a good laugh can do wonders for your mental health. You can do this by just hanging out with your funniest friend or simply watching your favorite TV show. There is a reason why people say that comedy is the best medicine!

7. Let yourself cry.

Unfortunately, in our society, there is a stigma around crying. We tend to view it as a sign of weakness when in reality crying can be a great way to just let everything out of relieving some stress. Crying releases endorphins that are scientifically proven to make you feel better so don’t be ashamed to let those tear flow.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
