I am a sophomore at UW - Platteville. I come from Milwaukee which has a population of around 923,245 people. Platteville is three hours away and has a population of around 12,285, that is about 75% less than the population of Milwaukee. Like every high school senior, I had to choose between a few different colleges. I chose the college that offered the best program state-wide for my major; sure it was 3 hours from home, but going away to the right college has benefited me in every way possible.
So here are my "before college" tips for you:
1. Do not choose a college only because your Friend/Boyfriend/Girlfriend Is going there.
Choose a college that has the major you want, and offers the best programs for YOU. Don't worry, you'll still have your friends from home, but going to a college away from home gives you the opportunity to make new friends!
2. Break the cliche.
"Son, you're giving up your dream." "No dad, I'm giving up yours!" Pick a college that's right for you and your personality. Explore colleges on your own, you don't have to follow in your family's footsteps. That doesn't mean you should only consider colleges your family doesn't want you to go to. Choose a college you want to go to, don't base it on someone else's wants.
3. Do not rush the application process.
Take your time and research colleges that are right for you. Some colleges have applications that take time, do not rush through them.
4. Apply, Apply, Apply!
Everyone has their doubts on whether or not they think a college will accept them or not. Apply anyway. It's always better to apply to a hundred schools than only a handful. Your possibilities are endless.
5. Cost.
Whether it's you or your parents paying for college, cost should be at least somewhat a factor. Even with scholarships and Financial Aid school expenses can add up quickly. On the other end you shouldn't just base your choice on expense. Just be cautious.
6. Distance.
When choosing a college, the location should play a role in the process. So whether you're scared to be away from home, or want to go as far away as possible, distance shouldn't be the final decision factor.
7. Go with your gut.
You'll know what school is the right fit. Ignore the other voices that may influence you or change your mind and choose the college that just feels right. You'll be much happier.
Good Luck!
