7 Tips for Being a Campus Leader

College is full of hundreds of organizations to become a part of, whether it is a Greek organization, academic group or campus job. As we move into spring semester, you might become interested in becoming more than just an organization member. As a second semester senior, I have found myself in a few leadership positions over the years (including here at The Odyssey) so I thought I would share some tips and tricks for those who are in a new leadership position this semester or hope to get one in the fall.

1. Take Responsibility.

Take responsibility for yourself and your actions, first and foremost. People will look up to you and you want to set a good example. Second, take responsibility for the group. If something goes wrong and you are in charge, the responsibility falls on you.

2. Do What's Asked of You, and More.

A leader who really cares for their organization doesn't just do the bare minimum. They want to see the organization grow and become even better than it was before.

3. Make Plans and Goals.

Leaders should want to make a difference. If you have an idea, make a plan for how to execute it. Being organized and goal oriented will also help gain the respect of the members.

4. Be a Helper.

The way to show that you really care about your organization is by helping out. Even the smallest gestures, like cleaning up after and event or volunteering for a small task, can make a big difference. It's as simple as asking "What can I do to help?"

5. Delegate.

It's ok to need help, you can't do everything by yourself. The organization will be better off if more people are working together to do the work anyway.

6. Find a Balance Between Being the Good Cop and the Bad Cop.

Of course you want your members to like you but you also don't want them to walk all over you. Find ways to keep them engaged without being harsh. Be firm but fun.

7. Inspire.

It will be stressful, and sometimes you might want to throw in the towel, but don't let the hard stuff get you down. You are in this position for a reason. Someone out there saw something in you and knew you could make a difference. Never give up and inspire others to do the same.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
