7 Times We Wanted Our Moms At College

Some people may claim they are pretty independent while away at school, but for many of us, our moms have guided us through much of our lives. Being away from our moms while at school can be hard sometimes, especially in the instances below.

1. You're sick.

There is nothing I want more when I'm sick than my mom. I call my mom all the time when I'm sick, and as much as it helps to talk to her on the phone, I just want her right there next to me telling me I'm going to be okay.

2. You want a home-cooked meal.

Dining halls are okay when you don't want to cook your own food, but sometimes you want a real meal, and you want it to be a meal your mom makes. Chicken strips every day can get quite boring, and I know I love going home to a meal made by my mom.

3. You don't want to pay for your own things.

When we were younger, we were used to our parents paying for clothes and food when we went out shopping or to a restaurant. You never realize how much things cost until you have to start paying for them yourself.

4. You don't want to do your laundry.

At home, my dirty laundry usually disappears from its basket and magically appears clean on my bed later that day. In college, the dirty laundry piles up and stares you in the face every time you add another shirt to the top of it. Those "magical" days when it seemed that laundry did itself, but it was really our moms, were the best days.

5. You can't see the floor of your room.

Similar to doing your own laundry, picking up your room is a task that usually was done at home with little of your own effort put in. Soon enough, your dorm room or apartment floor is covered, and you can't even find solid ground to stand on.

6. You're upset.

In dorms or shared apartments, it's hard to confide in someone if you aren't comfortable. Many resort to crying in the shower, so no one can see they were upset. Many times you wish your mom was there to comfort you, and you could cry in her arms instead of crying alone.

7. You walk into your empty room.

We've grown up going home and seeing our moms' smiling faces. They'd greet us and ask how our day was. You get the similar feeling with a roommate, but sometimes everyone gets so busy that they forget to ask how everyone else's day was. The greeting you get from your mom is like no other, and it's missed when you walk into an empty room with no greeting.

Our moms are a big part of our lives growing up, and we are used to going to them for a lot of things. When they're x number of miles away, it is quite common to miss them and everything they do. These are just a few times I've wanted my mom at college with me, but there are hundreds more that could apply.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
