7 Thoughts I Had While Moving into College
Rayona Cash

Moving can be stressful, but moving into a college? That's extremely, extremely stressful. For those of you who have had the good fortune to not have to move out of the house yet...prepare yourself. It's rough to say the least. So, here are some of the thoughts that crossed my mind either as I was packing, moving or unpacking.

1. Why do I have so many clothes?

Why is it that when I'm trying to get dressed, I can never find any good outfits, but when I was packing for college, I literally had too many clothes that I had to leave some in a suitcase under my bed in my dorm room?

2. I want to bring my dog...can I bring my dog? No?

I am a proud mom to two four-legged babies, a Golden Retriever named Sassy and a Miniature Dachshund named Ginger. They are my children and I often find myself wanting to snuggle my babies.

3. So...many...stairs...

Why? Why so many stairs? And WHY NO ELEVATOR? Four flights of stairs with a refrigerator is no fun for ANYONE...especially when I fall down them and break my neck, all for the sake of moving in.

4. Am I allowed to have this in a freshman residence hall?

If the question is candles, grilled cheese makers, or drop cords...the answer is no. For some reason...the answer is no.

5. Where is that one thing? I know I packed it!

Where's my toothbrush? What about my turtle? Where did my K-Cups go? WHY IS EVERYTHING DISAPPEARING?! I KNOW I PACKED THESE THINGS!

6. I already miss my family and friends.

My mom and dad left 10 minutes ago and I already want them back. I left my friends yesterday and I want to hang out with them ASAP.

7. You know what? Despite all this crappy stuff, I can tell I'm gonna have an amazing time here.

Even though I've been at Catawba less for only a week...I can already tell that I'm going to love every second of my time here. Well, maybe not every second because I've already messed up my foot since I've been here, but I'll love it here regardless.

Moral of the story is, even if you have a hard time moving or you get homesick really easily, I promise it will all be okay in the end. Your legs and arms are going to be sore from lifting and carrying things, but every second of it will be worth it. So, go! Move into your new dorm, apartment or house. Don't dread it! Moving comes with so many amazing opportunities, like making new friends or maybe even meeting a new love interest. Go with excitement or sadness...tears are okay! And as a last reminder, stairs are not your friend. ALWAYS find an elevator...if there is one that is.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
