7 Thoughts On The Cursed Child

There were high expectations that weren't met.

Expecto Pa--- no man. This is not what I thought it would be.

I'll be honest, I didn't expect JK Rowling's newest release, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, to be life changing like the seven book Harry Potter series. But I did have high expectations at the same time. I thought I would be able to feel the magic, see it all in my head so vividly, feel like I'm actually in the book, fall deeply in love with characters, and gain a real hatred for some.

I know it wasn't a novel or piece of literature that is in depth, but I mistakenly compared it to the last seven books. This is where I went wrong. Here are 7 reasons why Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is a great quick read, but not a great read.

1. It's not an actual book.

I'm one of those people that likes an actual book. When I first started The Cursed Child, it was hard to read because it was a script. It was unexpectedly difficult, and even though my mind began to flow more with the script, it was still a tad choppy.

2. You don't feel as much.

When you were reading the part in The Order of the Phoenix where a certain special someone falls through a curtain of death *I am not spoiling anything for any muggles out there* you felt the death yourself. You felt that this person SERIOUSLY just fell out of your arms into this BLACK hole of death. *see what I did there? In The Cursed Child, the statements and stage presentations are there, but the detail is being dangled in front of you like a doughnut while you're on a treadmill.

3. The Cursed Child is a squib when it comes to magic.

"A Squib is someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn’t got any magic powers. Kind of the opposite of Muggle-born wizards, but Squibs are quite unusual."
- Ron Weasley discussing Argus Filch.

Don't get me wrong there is a lot of magic in this screenplay! But it is magic that is old news. We didn't really learn anything new and I guess that's why it wasn't as exciting to me. There were a few really cool parts but all in all, it was bland and "been there, done that" magic.

4. Harry kind of sucks.

Harry Potter has become a Dad. And three times at that! He's not a very understanding one either. I guess he has his reasons but I just didn't like him at all. It reminded me of when Ron and Harry were fighting in The Deathly Hallows and they were just plain jerks. I was disappointed that Harry was kind of a bad dude.

5. It was too fast.

As said before, it's a quick read. Like a SUPER quick read. I finished it in approximately four hours and I was getting very distracted in those four hours! If I was completely focused, it would have been one. I don't know, am I the only one that likes to savour a book? It was all ripped away from me so quickly!

6. The intensity was...not intense

Aside from the minimal detail that was given to us, the intensity that was slipped in there wasn't really intense. The suspenseful aspect was slim-to-none. I answered all of the questions I had in my head on my own before I flipped the page, I feel like I wrote the damn thing it was so predictable! Come on, throw me a curve-ball!

7. The ending was...sweet

Not bittersweet...just sweet. Which is slightly saddening. Sometimes I get the sour taste in my mouth at the end of a book. I'm sad and don't know what to do next. But this time, I was oddly happy to put the book down. It wasn't really a satisfying feeling either. There was no "YES!" or "NOOO!" It was "...okay." What are we, The Fault in Our Stars?!

There ya have it, my first book review. I know some of you will disagree, but we can just agree to disagree, yes? Aside from the negativity placed on your page above, it was a good book. I enjoyed it, and it was a wonderful little snippet of Harry Potter that I have been waiting for after many years. I mean how could I hate a book that had a character in it like Scorpius- he is the most perfect thing! If you're looking for a light read to get your magical fix, then pick this one up! I guarantee you will finish it in a few hours at Barnes and Noble and not have to purchase it. However, I'm going to go back to my Ravenclaw Tower and re-read the seven books to get my fix of charms, potions, and Ridikkulus some Boggarts.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
