Growing up as the oldest sibling has its good times, but also some bad. Being the oldest comes with so much responsibility that was just thrown down on you because you were born first. You always have your younger sibling watching your every move, so it puts a lot of pressure on you.
Let me tell you what I've found growing up as the oldest of three in my family.
1. You instantly became their role model, even when you didn’t want to be.
2. Getting your license was supposed to be your chance of freedom. Your parents freaked out when you were learning to drive, but once you passed the test you were basically the chauffeur to your siblings.
3. You never had to worry about hand-me-downs. When back to school came, you would dance your way through the store excited about all the new clothes you'd be getting.
4. You were basically the guinea pig of the family. Your parents used you as a trial run and always held the highest expectations of you. You're their first, so they wanted to get it right.
5. You were the in-house babysitter because your parents didn't want to pay for an actual babysitter. No need for a professional when they had you around.
6. This then made you act like a second mom to them. You always were in charge, telling them what they could and couldn't do resulting in them always calling you "bossy" or other mean names.
7. And lastly, no matter what you will always have your younger siblings back. Because face it, that's what being an older sibling is all about.
For all the things you may have hated or loved about being the oldest sibling you know that in the end they made you the person you are today. Even if your siblings gave you a hard time, you still always get emotional when they grow up. To them you will always be someone they look up to.
