It's that time of year! I went into the pharmacy the other day to grab yet another box of NyQuil, and the woman behind the counter commented "that's been a popular one". I simply gave her a blank stare and nodded, because my throat hurt too much to talk. That time of year: when everyone is sick and no one is safe. I'm pretty sure I have the worst immune system ever, as this is already my third time being sick this winter. When you're sick, it seems like everyone around you has endless advice on how to heal you, or asks a lot of questions. They usually say things like this:
1. "What do you think it is?"
I don't know. I'm not a doctor. Everything hurts, my throat hurts from trying to answer your basically rhetorical question, and I would just like to go take a nap right now. Bye.
2. "You should go to the doctor"
Yes. Yes I should. But also, I am a poor college student who either has class or work. So, I'll get there when I get there. Thanks for your concern, I never would have thought of that!
3. "You should take _____"
Everyone seems to have their own favorite meds they swear by. When you're sick, your friends all of a sudden all gain pharmaceutical licenses and urge you towards a drug. It's appreciated, but I don't have time (nor funds) to go try all these things out. I'll stick to mine.
4. "How are you feeling today?"
Terrible. Look at me.
5. "Don't get me sick"
Ya know, that was really my goal for today. Darn. I guess I'll spare you.
6. "You sound like crap"
I'm aware. I swear I don't smoke a pack a day, and nor do I naturally have one of those raspy, sexy voices. I'm just dying, that's all.
7. "You should not be at work"
That is probably true. However, no one would take my shift last minute, and I have to pay the bills somehow.
