Summer is pretty much here and you might be thinking about how you don’t feel ready to trade your sweatpants and sweaters for swimsuits and shorts. There are simple things you can start doing right now to get fit for summer.
Most likely, you’ve heard a lot of this before but have simply struggled to put it into practice.
But let’s break it down to seven things you already know you should be doing to get fit for summer.
1. Stop skipping breakfast.
Yes, I know it’s almost summer and you’re tempted to sleep in and skip breakfast, but don’t do it. You already know it’s the “most important meal of the day.” Did you know it’s actually also supposed to be your largest meal of the day?
Since you haven’t eaten all night, it’s important to wake up and eat a good sized - but wise - breakfast. After that, each meal should get smaller with dinner being more like a large snack.
According to WebMD, people who eat breakfast are more likely to weigh less than those who skip it. Eating breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the rest of the day and also give you more energy to be active during the day.
2. Snack more.
Rather than eat three large meals in one day, you should actually eat healthy snacks and small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism up. Eating snacks also makes you less hungry throughout the day so you end up eating less when it’s mealtime. According to the Livestrong Foundation, snacks should be around 100 calories and include a mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Nuts, low-fat cheese, yogurt, fruits, vegetables, hummus - get creative.
3. Keep track of what you eat.
It’s way too easy to overeat when you’re not keeping track of how much you eat. Simply writing down what you’ve eaten will help you be more aware of how much food you’re consuming. I highly suggest using an online tool like MyFitnessPal.com that helps you reach your fitness goals. Sites like MyFitnessPal show you just how many calories, grams of fat, sodium, etc. are in the foods you’re eating. It makes a huge difference when you actually see what’s in your food. There are times you might think that what you’re eating is healthy, but with a tool like MyFitnessPal, you could find out that it is actually very bad for you.
4. Hit the gym or just go outside!
Okay so not everyone loves to workout, but getting active can actually be tons of fun. You’ll be surprised at what a difference 30 minutes of being active a day can make.
Your activity should be catered to the kind of changes you want to see in your body. If you have your heart set on toning your body and replacing fat with muscle, you should start running, doing ab workouts, and lifting some weights. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Running does not have to be excruciating. If you really don’t like to run, you can do some fast walking that still give your muscles a good workout. I’ll admit, ab workouts are painful, but the pain actually feels good. You can feel your stomach getting toned. And you don’t have to go to the gym to lift weights. I know a gym membership can be expensive, so just invest in a couple of dumbbells and there are a lot of strengthening exercises you can do outside of a gym.
An intense workout isn’t for everyone and I know that some people are way too busy for those kinds of workouts. But, as I mentioned before, getting active is fun if you just choose something you like and get moving. Bike around town with friends, dance, go swimming, walk your dog, do some yoga, play a sport - as long as you’re getting active, you’re getting fit.
5. Drink a lot of water.
Your body is about 60 percent water, so drink a lot of it. Water improves the health of your skin, hair, eyes - everything. Because, well, it’s all made of water.
The common recommendation is eight to ten glasses of water a day. When you wake up, one of the first things you should do is drink a glass of water. I recommend carrying a bottle of water around with you wherever you go. Before exercising, you should drink considerable amounts of water in the hours leading up to your workout. Then, drink plenty of water after your workout. Failing to drink enough water can lead to dehydration and fainting or worse. Seriously, drink lots of water!
6. Find someone to hold you accountable.
It takes a lot of discipline to stay fit and it can be hard to keep it up for long periods of time. Having a friend or family member hold you accountable is key. But make sure that the person holding you accountable is as dedicated to getting fit as you are. I recommend teaming up with more than one person so that when two of you are slacking, a third or fourth person can get you all motivated.
7. Be confident - because you’re beautiful.
Most importantly, be confident. You are beautiful as you are.
Fitness is important because it contributes to your health and boosts confidence, but never lose sight of the fact that you are unique and lovely.
So this summer, be confident in who you are and have fun.
