7 Things To Understand When Dating A Musician

Life is a song, love is the music.

It is not easy dating a musician. They are usually emotionally driven and generally put their music first. However, there are many wonderful things that come with dating a musician. They are determined, artistic and their commitment to their music will also prove their commitment in your relationship.

1. Their practice time is valuable to them.

Practice will always be a priority for them. Whether they have an audition for the New York Philharmonic, or a gig at a local coffeehouse, they are committed to producing their very best. Their practice time is their time, and they don’t want any distractions or anyone interrupting them. If there comes a time when they will allow you to listen while they practice, take the once in a lifetime opportunity and be quiet while doing so.

2. You won't always come first in the relationship.

As much as they care about you, they care about their music and career. If they have an audition or performance coming up, that is their priority for the time being. When they say that they can only stay an hour or that they can't stay to spend time with you at all, don't take it personally. Value the time that you do get to spend with them, because they value it more than you know.

3. If they are inspired to compose, everything will stop.

When the inspiration hits, time will freeze and their lives will pause for a minute. Everything will be focused on the piece or concept they are creating. That is the only thing on their mind and they will keep their life on pause until they are ready to be finished.

4. They are perfectionists.

Yes, they might have been in the practice room for the last four hours. But until the excerpt is perfect, they will continue to remain there. With the music world being so competitive, every note, every rhythm and every phrase needs to be right on. And you know how musicians get there? Practice, practice, practice.

5. They will sometimes have to cancel plans last minute.

Musicians are taught to take every opportunity given to them. We never know which opportunity will be the one that is our big break, so we take them all. If they come up last minute, we might choose it over you. But again, don't take it personally.

6. They think of the safety of their instruments before their own.

Musicians will go to extreme measures to make sure their instruments remain safe. They will NEVER leave their instruments in the car. If they are falling and the choice is between their instrument hitting the ground or them, you bet they will hit the ground before their instrument. Their instruments are like their children.

7. They can (and will) harmonize with everything.

You might not realize it, but while you are vacuuming, they are harmonizing with the vacuum. When the fire alarm goes off, they realize that the pitches create a dissonance. When you are in the car singing, they will begin to harmonize in every way possible. Oh, and the buzzing from the A.C.? You bet they are coming up with a tune to go with that as well.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
