7 Things To Help You Adjust

Do you miss your fur babies?

7 Things To Help You Adjust
Myself

Are you having a hard time adjusting to living without your pets? I know I am! I have a wonderful dog named Shadow, and a frog named King Amphibian. Going from cuddling with my dog every night to not seeing a dog for more than 2 seconds once a month is a huge change, and it takes time to adjust. Here are some things that might help ease your heartache from missing them.

1.) They miss you too! You might be asking yourself, "How is that a good thing?". It is in fact a very good thing, because then when you see them again, you will have a great time together! Whether its taking a long walk or playing fetch, your fur baby will be so happy to see you again! Also, you will learn to greatly appreciate your time with them!

2.) Due to great advances in technology, you can get yourself photo/ video updates of your pupper(s) and show them off to your friends! Before Fall Family Weekend, I remember just showing my friends videos of Shadow, and just getting so excited to introduce her to everybody. When the day finally came, all of my friends knew who she was, and they all already loved her. (Shadow loved them too!)

3.) Know that this is a normal part of growing up, and that this will get easier. Right now, it might not feel ok, but it will. It will be extremely difficult at first, but both of you will learn to adjust to this new way of life. It might not be ideal, but you will be ok.

4.) You are not alone. For a lot of people, college is when they leave their fur babies at home. If you are having an especially hard time, talk to someone! Talk to one of your friends, a counselor, a professor, or even call home! It's perfectly ok to feel the way you feel.

5.) Your feelings are valid! Since everyone is different, people will adjust in different ways. If someone is invalidating how you are feeling, they are the ones who are wrong, not you. Your feelings are completely valid. There is nothing wrong with feeling your feelings, don't ever let anyone tell you differently.

6.) Remember to take some time to breathe. For some people, pets are a huge stress reliever. Sometimes, when people lose that stress reliever, they get overloaded and don't know what to do. One trick that helps me calm down is the 4-7-8 method. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Do that as many times as you need, its different for everyone!

7.) Know that this too will pass. You will see them again, and when you do, you will be so much more excited and happy! Remember to keep this in the back of your mind, you can do this!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
