7 Things To Do When Nothing Is Going Right

Just when you think that your life is over...

Okay, so your life seems to be about over. Maybe from a breakup, maybe from the worst fight you've ever been in with your best friend, maybe from getting fired from your job or maybe you just don't know what to do next. Whatever it is, remind yourself that life is difficult and not a walk in the park, but rather life is about experiences that challenge your personal growth. Being in this position recently, here are some things that I've come up with to help your heart, mind, and soul to bring joy and excitement into your life when nothing seems to be going right.

1. Redecorate your room.

This is a lot easier said than done, and boy is it a tough job. But a lot of the time, all people need is some change in their life and redecorating your room is a perfect way to achieve that. Grab some paint samples from Home Depot, choose a color that you like, and paint away. Paint some canvases to bring out your inner artist and move some furniture around. I'm always for changing the unchangeable.

2. Delete old conversations on your computer and phone.

This might be the most refreshing action; a lot of the times we are stuck in a rut when we feel as though the people in our lives aren't meeting our standards, whether that is not calling us when we want someone to talk to or leaving us out. By deleting old texts and old conversations, this gives us a reminder that we don't need anyone who brings us down. I'm not saying to remove everyone from your life, but by doing this is a reminder that you are your own being.

3. Try a new restaurant.

Food is anyone's best friend and it has a therapeutic healing that comes with it. By trying a new restaurant with someone or even going by yourself is a refreshing and exciting way to get your mind off things.

4. Become the healthiest you.

There is no better revenge than becoming extremely hot. Exercise is scientifically beneficial for everything in your physical body as well as your mental and emotional state. Make a nutrition plan, make a workout plan, and challenge yourself. There is honestly no better time than now!

5. Read a good book (or many!)

Since you have more alone time than usual, this is a perfect opportunity to catch up on those books that you have been meaning to read. Jump on Amazon or go to Barnes and Noble to read some great books to bring out your inner nerd- it's good for your brain AND you might actually learn something!

6. Get coffee with a good friend or relative.

There is nothing better than feeling like there are people out there who care about your wellbeing. Getting coffee with someone who loves you and truly cares about you is a good, refreshing way to remind yourself that there is good in the world and there are good people who want the best for you. Keeping things inside is not healthy and venting to someone who cares will feel really good.

7. Emerge yourself in nature.

Go outside, take a hike, and breathe in some fresh air. Sometimes all you need is a reminder that life is so much bigger than your problems and there is a lot to be thankful for.

Hopefully these things to do when things aren't going your way were helpful to you- and remember that life is hard but there is always something to smile about. Remain thankful for the things that you do have and remind yourself that sometimes there is nowhere to go but up!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
