Summer is Michigan's most glorious season. From the beaches on the great lakes to the numerous festivals going on in small towns and big cities. It's the time of year to dust off the grill and have an infinite amount of cookouts; the time of year to stay out late with good buddies, sit around a toasty bonfire and stargaze. Here are seven of the top things to do in Michigan to make this summer in the mitten state memorable.
1. Tulip Time Festival.
In Holland, Mich., celebrate Dutch culture and heritage. With parades, Dutch dancing, carnivals, and fireworks, Holland will have you returning year after year.
2. Detroit Tigers baseball game.
As I have pointed out in a previous article, there is nothing more pure Michigan than a baseball game during the summer. Enjoy the nice sunshine and stay a while after the last pitch for an amazing fireworks show that lights up the entire skyline.
3. National Cherry Festival.
Head to one of the most go-to destinations in Michigan, Traverse City, for the best tart cherries in the nation. Enter the pie-eating contest, watch parades, and don't miss an unforgettable airshow.
4. Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival.
Enjoy a nice glass of beer and taste some delicious food while listening and watching bands and dancers take you to Germany. You can join the sing-along or just sit back and relax. Visitors from all over the country, even overseas, flock here to enjoy the vibrant scene.
5. UP.
The wonderful hidden treasure of Michigan is the countryside in the Upper Peninsula. Take a tour through the famous Soo Locks, a hike along the Tahquamenon Falls, or paddle along the Pictured Rocks. And stay the night and go searching for the northern lights. The UP is sure to take your breath away no matter where you venture.
6. Labor Day Weekend.
There's just so much to do during this particular weekend. Arts, Beats, and Eats in downtown Royal Oak, The Michigan State Fair, and the Romeo Peach Festival, or head up north to take the five-mile walk across the mighty Mackinac Bridge. Just to name a few events.
7. Lake Michigan sunset.
To end any day on a high note, head to one of the many beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan for a picture-perfect sunset. There's nothing more beautiful than a summer well spent in Michigan.
