7 Things To Be Thankful For When Moving Into School
Good Stuff Moving

Whether a returning student or newcomer, moving in to college is an emotional time. This is a time filled with “goodbyes” and “see you soon”. As you begin the journey that is a new school year, here are 7 things to be thankful for.

Your move in crew.

Whether it be parents, siblings, friends, significant others…those are the people who will always be there for you--and let's face it, you room would look like crap without them. Don’t let their hard work go unnoticed.

Your on campus support system.

Whether it’s friends, teachers, or other familiar faces, these are the people you interact with every day. These people are your go-to for just about anything that can happen, so appreciate them. Be there for them when they need you because you know the favor will be returned down the road.

New opportunities.

With each new year comes countless new opportunities. New people, new classes, new clubs, new jobs, etc. So instead of jumping to conclusions, take your time with things and take each opportunity as it comes. You never know where that opportunity could take you.

New relationships.

Whether you’re new to the whole roommate thing or are starting the new year with a new roommate, take time to get to know them. Spend time with them, because they’re most likely going to be your best friend.

Your education.

There may be days when you don’t want to get out of bed for that 8am class—go anyways. You’re very lucky to be able to get an education, don’t take it for granted. Be eager to learn new things. It may seem like a chore some days to spend hours typing up that essay or lab report, but you’ll look back someday and miss it.

The local barista.

If you’re anything like me, some days it seems impossible to function without that espresso filled cup of cheer. When you walk in in a zombie mode, they know exactly how you feel. So appreciate them—because we all know you’re much more pleasant after your visit.

Your foundation.

Never forget where you came from—after all, it is how you got here. Remember all your past experiences that make you the person you are now. It may seem far-fetched, but even the people you can’t stand played a role in getting you to where you are today. So take a moment to reflect on your beginnings and be grateful for your past—it got you here.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
