New Years is just around the corner. Where did the time go? There's something about the begining of a new year that makes you want to throw out all of your bad habits and develop new ones that will make your life better. If you're a college student, the new year provides the perfect time to set some new resolutions that can help make your year in school more positive and productive. As a college students, I want to make a new year's resolution that will guide me throughout the next semester with ease.

Here are 7 things that make up a college student's New Year's resolution:

1. Stop procrastinating

Sure, we have all procrastinated on an assignment and done pretty well on it. However, procrastinating is a lot more difficult to do in college and nothing good comes from it.

2. Develop better study habits

We always hear our professors talk about how important studying is in college, and we have to admit that they're right.

3. Make healthier choices

Choosing fruits and vegetables over pizza and fries is always difficult, but it is also doable as well as beneficial!

4. Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep

I don't know about you, but I am so tired of being tired all of the time. I'm sure us college students want to have the energy to be productive and do what has to be done, but it starts with getting enough sleep to actually function.

5. Exercise more often

When running out of breath while walking to class everyday, I'm always reminded of how out of shape I really am. Exercise is a common New Years resolution among college students. Just a little 30 minutes at the gym can give you more energy throughout the day and possibly throughout the week

6. Try something new that will get you away from your comfort zone

For freshmen, college itself is a very new experience. During this second semester of your first year, try to push yourself out of your comfort zone even further. Some adventure is fun and can really enhance your college experience.

7. Focus more on yourself.

Our health, hopes, and dreams are what's important right now. Let's focus more on ourselves and what we need to better ourselves.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
