My sister and I were born close together (not even a year apart) but, alas, I am forever doomed to be the younger sibling. However, while there are frustrations to being younger that make me want to pull my hair out, there are also benefits to being the younger one. Either way, there are seven sure things that happen when you are the younger sibling.
1. You always get your their hand-me-downs.
Clothes, toys, and anything else you can think of that once belonged to your sister now belongs to you. It’s a good way to save money on things but the clothes may not always fit or they may forget that they don’t own those things anymore. Oh well, it’s a good idea in theory.
2. You are better at sharing than them.
It probably has something to do with the fact that you never had a period where you were the only child and didn’t have to share, but you are better at it than they are.
3. You’re going to have more rules than they did.
Maybe you’re just more of a handful than your siblings or maybe they were the handful. Either way, you aren’t allowed to have as much fun as they did.
4. You’re expected to do the same things she did.
Volleyball, art, no matter what your sister did, you are given an immense amount of pressure to do that as well.
5. You tend to hang around the same people.
If you are close enough in age like me and my sister are; we were both born the same year. When you’re that close in age then it might just be inevitable.
6. Your teachers will never call you by your name.
The number of times I’ve been called my sister’s name is almost ridiculous. It was almost sweet justice when my journalism teacher had me as a student first and spent the next three years calling my sister by MY name.
7. You often go to the same college as them.
I didn’t go to the same school as my sister, which I’m pretty grateful for, but a lot of people I know went to the same school as their older siblings. My roommate has three siblings, two of them as well as herself all attend the same university; only one of them is not attending this college but is still attending one 30 minutes from their school.
