Boys are good but candy is better

Ah love, there’s nothing like it, yet it seems like there’s only a select few who experience it. But when those relationships ultimately end it’s ugly all around. I can be the first to tell you that breakups suck—there’s nothing quite like being told that he doesn’t like a certain pair of jeans you own because it makes “your ass look saggy.” Breakups are the worst, but here are 7 sure-fire things that are way better than having a boyfriend.

1. Family

As cliché as it is, family is and always will be better than any boyfriend/girlfriend. A breakup can be a good thing because it can lead you to lean on your family and spend more quality time with them. Family members are the only people in your life who won’t leave you, partly because they can’t choose family but mostly because you are part of the family. Quality family time is so much more important than a boyfriend because these people are going to be with you for the long haul. Instead of wishing for a boyfriend/girlfriend, enjoy family time. Have a movie night or make dinner together. Laugh and make memories that won’t be tainted by a boyfriend or lack thereof.

2. Sleep

There’s not much else in this world that’s better than sleep—something we hate growing up and begin to cherish as we get older and as school becomes more stressful. Ah sleep, such a beautiful and relaxing time. Why waste time worrying about a boy who won’t text you back when you can peacefully sleep? Not only do you get to rest, but (aside from REM sleep) your brain activity slows way down so you can momentarily forget about his lack of response or even his lack of awareness at the fact that you like him.

3. Chocolate

Chocolate will always be better than boys, breakups, or even relationships. Chocolate is sweet and seemingly unending, unlike a lot of boys. Enough said.

4. Disneyland

No matter what, Disneyland will always hold a special place in my heart, a statement that I think many people can resonate with. Who cares about boys when at Disneyland? Disneyland is a place to lose yourself, to leave your problems at the gate, and to let your inner child out. The happiness of being at the park—the delicious food, the smiling characters, the sight of all of your childhood coming to life—will always far exceed any boy.

5. Traveling

Far better than any boyfriend is being able to explore the world around you. Why waste time in a city you know like the back of your hand with a guy who you’ll probably eventually say goodbye to? Traveling is so much better, getting to experience something different from what you’re used to, be it a different type of food or a different way of driving down the road. Wherever you go, as long as you go, you’re bound to have a great time—without a boyfriend.

6. Shoes

Retail therapy is the best therapy and nothing can fill your life more than an amazing pair of shoes.

7. Friends

As cliché as it is, friends will forever be better than boyfriends. Friends are the family you get to choose and are there with you through thick and thin. Where else would the saying, “Sisters before misters” (or more crude “chicks before dicks”) come from?

There are many things in life that are better than a boyfriend. While relationships can be fun, ultimately things like chocolate, shoes, and friends are honestly way better.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
